Good point.

Personally I think it is, though I fear the 3D rage has greatly slowed down 2D improvements. I could be wrong you know

The opposite is true. The 3DTVs also happen to be the best 2DTVs. The reason is the improvements needed for good 3D also improve the 2D performance.

The improvements in 2D are almost nil, other than small baby steps to improve the black level.

We are coming very close to the limit of improvements in 2D using what is available today for displays. They either have to go to a new display tech like OLED or they have to change the color depth from 8/24bit to 10/30 bit or 12/36 bit along with increasing the dynamic range by changing the sampling rate from 4:2:0 to 4:2:2 or 4:4:4
