Default Buying A comcast HD Box online ?

Ive seen some online on forums of people selling them.. now, ive heard from both sides on how theyre stolen, and or they never asked for the box back... now if somone was to buy one since its a comcast box, it should be purely plug n play correct? or is it somthing that on the comcast end, that they have to verify the box or serial numbers to allow it on the "digital" network.. i was just wondering because i saw an HD box for about 120 bux, i was thinking of buying it instead of having to rent it.. but i dont want to do anything thats illegal or ending up wasting my money on somthing that wont work.. ive always heard you can own your own cable box or what not, but i assume you guys would know a bit better as im very new to all of this..

Give Comcast a call and ask. Different cable companies have different issues. Yes they do use the serial number, so if it is stolen they'll know. eBay boxes are prolly ok.

Better to call before you buy the box than after, imo. You got to get them involved eventually.

Each box has a unique ID number, that's what makes it 'addressable'... the headend doesn't talk to anyone it hasn't been introduced to... You'll need to give them your ID number, if they'll let you...
