Default XA2 or A35?

I am going to get either the XA2 or the A35. And price is the issue right now. Is their any difference between the two I should know about?

I know they both support full HDMI 1.3a which is one reason why I am going to get one of them in about 2 to 4 weeks time.

Thanks in advance

The A35 is a 3rd generation player and the XA2 is a second generation. From what I understand, Toshiba is not going to make an XA3 and have left that market (esoteric) to other manufacturers such as Onkyo (check out the posts about Onkyo's new HD DVD player). Unless you are an audio/video purist choose the one which best fits your budget as I think you can't go wrong with either one.

Yes the A35 is a third gen player but the XA2 although technically a second gen player has been said by Toshiba themselves it is still their flagship player and has yet to be replaced with another player. You can not compare the A35's horrible Anchor Bay scaler to the XA2's terrific Silicon Optix HQX processor. This is the reason the A35's 1080p is garbage and the XA2's is flawless and crisp, the XA2s processor (HQV) deinterlaces 1080p way better than the A35s, there is no ifs, ands, or buts about it. They are so similar in price it would be a foolish decision to not get an XA2...

The A35's 1080p is garbage, I think not and many reviewers do not think so either. And since the poster is considering a new receiver, possibly the Onkyo TX-SR 875 which has an exceptional Reon HQ scaler the point would be moot. And although the XA2 does have better performance/specs the garbage statement still does not apply. In fact, if he does get the 875, the HD-A2 or A3 would be sufficient.

I have an a35. If it is garbage, it sure is good looking garbage.
1080P looks fine to me on HD and SD discs.

Ditto that. And also the new Onkyo HD DVD player is what is going to replace the XA2. Check it out here http://www.highdefforum.com/showthread.php?t=54556

According to some postings on this site today, the A2 can be had for $99 at some Sears stores. I would call ahead to verify and check stock.

Thanks for the info guys. The price difference between the XA2 vs. the A35 is about $200 to $250.

Doing research on both I found the XA2 being superior in DVD up-converting vs. the A35, but the A35 still does an amazing job.

As for 1080p viewing quality in both video & audio via HDMI, both are almost 100% identical. So, in reality both are great HDMI 1.3a HD DVD players.

I would probably go with the A35, save the $200 to $250 and put that money toward a nice Onkyo Digital Receiver.

What do you say?

You could always get the Onkyo TX-SR 875 which has the best video processor chip available (Reon HQ) and then just get the Toshiba HD A3. That would be ideal.

I checked out the Onkyo TX-SR 875 and it looks like the best digital receiver out right now, but its price is steep I thought it costs around $800 or so, but I got the Onkyo TX-SR 805 confused with it

Well, I am putting away my pennies for now, and then I will decide what to do in the very near future.

Thank you all for the help.

I went thru the same thing, trying to decide between the xa2 and a35. I finally decided on the a35 because it was less expensive and you get 2 more free movies. Plus I told myself I could always return it and get an xa2. But as it turns out, I'm quite happy with the a35.

My actual first choice was the XA2. But since none was available around my area (I can't and don't wanna wait for it to ship plus I don't buy big ticket items online) I went ahead with the A35. So far so good. SD disks looks amazing. HD disks looks Maui Wowee. I have played around 30 hd and sd disks and haven't encountered a problem yet...knock on wood. Best looking garbage I have purchased yet.

Cool, I've been getting a lot of positive feedback for the A35. I think I am going to go for the A35 within 2 to 4 weeks time.

I've been struggling with the decision between the A35, the XA2, and the new Onkyo unit.
With Amazons price cut to $480 for the XA2 and the 2.7 FW adding bitstreaming and fixing some other problems for the XA2, I took the plunge for the XA2 last night.

I already have an A20, so I'm not expecting any kind of a PQ improvement for HD, but I am anxious to put the REON chip through its paces with my old SD DVD's and for only $75 more than an A35.

The XA2 is without question the better HD DVD player. If either player is in your budget, then the XA2 is the only smart choice. If money IS an issue and you get a substantially better price for the A35 then that would be the smart choice over nothing.
