Can't be done -entirely different hardware. The laser for hd-dvd reading is not the same as blu-ray.

i read that Blu Ray and HD DVD use the same exact laser and the rest is just software

how do the combo hd dvd and blu ray drives work?

dont they just have 2 lasers?

1 for bd/hddvd and
2 for dvd/cd?

and the main difference between hddvd and bluray is that blu ray relies on Java

would my xbox have to have java or could i just use the bluray java from the software update and include it in my software for hddvd? and have it on the hddvd player rom

It is more like 2 lasers:

1. for BD discs
2. for HD DVD & DVD discs

The lens distance to the disk is the same for HD DVD & SD DVD, but too far away for BD reading.

Trust me. Even MS cannot do what you want with existing hardware if they wanted to. What makes you think some hacker can do all that including adding BD-Java to the 360 to play BD discs? And then even if some hacker found a way, don't you think it would be considered a modded 360 and be banned from MS Live network, so no more online playing?

it would be considered a modded xbox? that sucks

but anyway why wouldnt i be able to adjust the focus of the laser?

and the Java would be stored on the 1GB Flash INSIDE the HD-DVD Player so java would work and the xbox wouldnt have to be actually softmodded for java

and your wrong on the LAser

the BD / HDDVD Laser is 405nm and is violet a dvd or cd laser is red at 650nm

so the hddvd laser WOULD NOT be able to read the dvd

How would you adjust the lens? Manually? It needs to be a precise distance and manually wouldn't work.

That Java would need an operating system to run it though and that would require modifying the O/S of the 360 to run the BD-Java.

As far as the laser if I remember correctly, the HD DVD players have ONE laser that does UV & Red both, and the distance from the lens to the disc is the same for them. The BD laser uses a glass lens while the HD DVD/DVD laser uses a plastic lens. You need(ed) a glass lens for the much closer distance to read BD discs.

I suppose you could try to make this work, but I bet you will be alone in the attempt. Just too many difference between BD & HD DVD to make it work which is WHY no one has attempted it. But give it a try. It may make you rich if you succeed.

i thought software focused the lens

and i didnt know about the plastic vs glass lens

it the plastic tomake it cheaper or does it actually effect the actual laser beam?

AFAIK, focus is a physical distance from the lens to the disc based upon the lens. The plastic was all that was needed for the HD DVD format because of the lens distance from the disc surface. With the BD players the lens must be much closer to the disc to read the higher density discs, and WHY HD DVD & BD drives are not compatible directly. There were a few stand alone dual format players but I believe they had separate lens systems that swapped places for each disc type.

I knew this stuff much better back 2 years ago while the format war was winding down, but this is what I remember from memory.

Dude, you can buy a Blu-Ray player these days for like $100. This is not worth your time.

Default Can Xbox play Blu ray?

I think you maybe need the Xbox Blu ray player software which comes from f2fsoft. It can help you play Blu ray on Xbox one.
But if you want to play Blu ray on Xbox 360, you may need to rip DVD to MP4 firstly, and use the Xbox 360 Blu ray ripper software.
