Netflix today announced an exclusive long-term deal with Relativity Media to offer movies to Netflix customers during the "pay TV" window, putting Netflix in direct competition with HBO and Showtime to offer movies before the DVD street date.

Relativity Media has produced about 200 movies that have generated more than $13 billion in box-office revenue, including recent titles like Robin Hood, Get Him to the Greek, and Grown Ups. The first movies under the deal to be available on Netflix streaming include upcoming titles like The Fighter, Skyline, Season of the Witch, and Movie 43.

"Our continued goal is to expand the breadth and timeliness of films and TV shows available to stream on Netflix," said Ted Sarandos, chief content officer for Netflix. "Historically, the rights to distribute these films are pre-sold to pay TV for as long as nine years after their theatrical release. Through our partnership with Relativity, these films will start to become available to our members just months after their DVD release."

Added Mr. Sarandos: "Relativity has produced and financed some of the biggest and best films released in the last few years. We are thrilled to partner with them on their exciting upcoming slate of films and to be part of each other's ongoing success."

This is huge news, and a big win for Netflix. The traditional release windows and distribution channels are being challenged, and if Netflix is careful over the next few years, they will pose a serious threat to Comcast, HBO and Showtime.
