Digital Foundry

Best console gaming technical blog. No sales figures or witty game announcements here. Just game engine/hardware tech breakdown.

It's reads really well and doesn't become too tech-dense for the average gamer, and has the most poignant blog post I've read about this generation of consoles.

Some direct feed captures of console games with all kind of bench tracking. FPS, number or torn frames, how much AA, what kind of AA, etc. Interesting stuff for someone who takes the time to post in a gaming (sub) forum.

It's part of the Eurogamer web site, so read it in a British accent. It makes it that much better.

I actually did click over, but it was at the end of the day so I didn't get to invest too much into it. I'll try to tonight.

There actually is some pretty good articles in there. I know a lot of PS fans think the Eurogamer is anti-ps3 but I personally think they have a different point of view based on different standards than the norm (ie I don't think they're biased)

I'll look through it in a bit again, will post up anything interesting I find.

Why would eurogamer be anti-PS3? I thought europe was sony's strongest selling country? Wasn't it an exec from SCEE that said next-gen does not start until sony sez so?

I'm not saying that I think they are, but some people have claimed that their reviews of some ps3 games and such are biased

I think the EU is Sony's strongest region (don't remember off the top of my head)
Pachter seems to think that Japan will be Sony's saviour though... And FWIW the next gen doesn't start until *I* say so

They only take the side of the tech, so when they break down multiplat games, the PS3 usually gets shafted. Especially since they count dropped frames.

OTOH, They give all kinds of love to the Uncharted's and InFamous's of the world.

Europe is a continent, even though the EU wants you to think they are all one country.

What is the cause of the dropped frames? Poor game design or lack of hardware support?

SCEE - Sony Computer Entertainment Europe.

According to Sony, Europe is a section of their company as is Japan and the US.

I know, I was just trying to point out "EUROPE," whether a market segment or region, is still NOT a country. And I know I was off topic, hence the smily I used.

A combination. If you don't develop exclusively for the Cell, it can be hard to port for average developers.

The cream of the third party crop (EA Sports, Infinity Ward, Capcom, etc) get the PS3 version on par with the 360 version.

But for the average developer, working with the Cell engine is like a car mechanic working on a steam engine. Similar, but not the same at all.

Thank you for the response. I do have another question, though. If XBOX 360 and PS3 can be equaled only by certian developers, why would anyone get the PS3 over the 360, only to game? I picked up the PS3 last week, not for BD, but for gaming only. I thought the PS3 had more potential than the 360. In reality, even though the PS3 maybe capable of better experiences, we are not to that point yet? Will we ever get to that point before the new next gen systems are out? I like the games so far, but crap, 360 has far more. I wonder if I made a mistake.

I think PS3 has much better exclusives.

The general consensus is the PS3 has more potential, but that potential takes a ton of labor hours (money) to tap.

What 360 exclusive is bugging ya? If it's not Gears 2 or Halo 3, you're mistaking it for a better game than it is.

Just the site you linked to shows how the 360 has better performance over a set of parameters, i.e. frames dropped, etc. I know it has a lot to do with how the developers design the game and focus on the 360, especially the older games, but when will the developers focus on PS3 over 360? Exclusives given, like GOW 3. Really gets to me that the games that cross consoles appear to be better performers on 360. I like both consoles, and unfortunately, they will probably move on to a next-next gen if Sony can't pull this closer. It looks as though it may be more simple for them to start over and take the market. In the past that is exactly what the consoles did, i.e. Sega, NES, SNES, Dreamcast, GameCube, N64...... on and on. I seem to always pick the one that turns out to be a failure.
