Arrow Cnet: How Microsoft stole the show at E3

congratz MS...

http://news.cnet.com/8301-13506_3-10...eadlinesArea.0

CNET conducted a poll earlier this week asking readers which company--Nintendo, Microsoft, or Sony--had the most impressive announcements at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo.

More than 10,000 people responded. More than 51.9 percent of the respondents said Microsoft bested its competitors. Thirty-four percent of those who answered the poll said Sony had the best announcements. Nintendo finished last, with just 5.6 percent of respondents saying it had the best E3.
Ironically, the fourth option--"None of them--they were all yawners"--beat out Nintendo, with 8.4 percent of the vote.

It's a well-deserved victory for Microsoft. At this year's event, the company announced a new, expanded Xbox Live offering for the console, including a new video store with 1080p content. The Xbox 360 will also sport Facebook and Twitter integration.

Those announcements, however, paled in comparison to what came next. Microsoft will be offering full-game downloads on Xbox Live. On top of that, Halo:ODST, Left4Dead 2, Splinter Cell Conviction, and Forza Motorsport 3 will all be exclusive on the console. And in what may have shaken Sony's world more than any other announcement, Hideo Kojima took the stage, announcing that he is bringing his wildly popular Metal Gear Solid series to the Xbox 360 with Metal Gear Solid Rising.

All that's great. But Microsoft's biggest announcement was Project Natal. Taking Nintendo's motion control to a whole new level, Project Natal allows you to control on-screen action without a controller. It senses motion, sound, and 3D movement. Want to throw a pitch? Move your arm like a pitcher, and the game will throw the ball. Want to kick a soccer ball? Swing your foot forward, and the Xbox 360 will take care of the rest. It's like the Wiimote, but without the controller--and cooler.

You're probably wondering what Sony and Nintendo had to say at E3. Sony unveiled the PSP Go, a roster of exclusives, including Gran Turismo 5 and God of War 3, and a new motion controller that uses Sony's Eye technology to provide in-game motion control. It's cool, but it's no Project Natal.

Nintendo had a tough year at E3. It announced a new Super Mario Bros. title for the Wii. Super Mario Galaxy 2 is also coming to its console. But that's about it. Oh, and a pulse reader called the Wii Vitality Sensor. Yeah, I don't get it, either.

As you can see, it wasn't much of a competition for the Xbox 360. Sony's big announcement was motion control. And Nintendo is still staying true to Mario. In the meantime, Microsoft is pushing the envelope and taking its business to the next level.

I think it's time that we commend Microsoft for its gaming efforts. Nintendo played it safe, with a few minor announcements, hoping that they would be enough to stay in the lead. Sony continued its utter disregard for reality (can we please get a PS3 price drop?). But Microsoft took a step back, evaluated the market, and announced plans that could transform the industry.

Game downloads are the future. Exclusives help sell game consoles. And taking motion control to the next level is the right move for Microsoft.

You can say what you want about Microsoft and its Xbox 360. But at this year's E3, it made the competition look foolish. And in the cutthroat business of video games, that's a major victory in and of itself.

Wake up, Nintendo and Sony. Microsoft has.

Woohoo 5000 people who more than likely already have an Xbox 360 have been sold on Microsoft's E3 conference.

The Wii is definitely screwed now. You are right Cyg Microsoft have won this gen.

You're right. He shouldn't have even posted it. In fact, Xbox sucks, MS sucks, anyone who owns an Xbox 360 sucks, and Sony rules.

Who's waggle reigns supreme!!!

Sorry Project Natal and Sony's thing look great but I need an actual game to get excited. I think its ridiculous that all the great games shown at E3 are being overshadowed by this motion stuff.

I fell asleep a third of the way through the article... Who did Cnet say won? ZZZzzzzz.... Huh, what were we talking about?

Speaking of Motion crap, PS3 has had motion controllers for a while. The controller whatever it's called is already a motion based controller. I've been playing Ragdoll Kung Fu on it a lot lately. Maybe not laid out for the most optimum motion capture games, but it's already doing this. I don't really get what the new "wand" deal will do for them.

Project Natal is a gimmick right now. It's been tried before to limited success, and maybe it will be better, but since there is no tactile feedback in any way, people have always been impressed by the way it works and utterly unmoved into actually using it. Maybe Natal will be different, but I see it being a big deal for all of a month or two when it hits and then people will get frustrated by it and move back to the old way.

I found Natal to be far more exciting then any game in recent (or distant) memory. It can really change the way we play and interact - far more then the wii did.

Hey, I'm fair and balanced, just stopping Xbox only gamers getting carried away. A lot easier to be level headed when you own all 3 system and play all of them regularly

LOL! From your posts, I wouldn't know you owned an Xbox. Hell, me and Cygnus and Sal are pretty much the only Xbox guys around here, this place is a PS3 fanboy haven! Go after those guys if you're so fair and balanced!

Proof: Halo 4 was announced Monday and there hasn't been a single thread about it yet.

I've been doing my best to convince people it's better to bring your own hardware and just get the source code (ie: PC gaming), but the boxes with their flashy lights and clumsy interfaces have most hypnotized.

There's no love for Halo: Reach because Luke 'Halo' Smith isn't even involved. Sure it's Bungie by name, but it ain't Halo Bungie.

That's just because Cygnus is being kept so busy proving the 360's might and power in other threads to start one.

Oh, and don't forget, I also have all three.

I don't think any real news has been let out about it.

Check out my sig, you'd actually see that I prefer the Xbox for cross platform titles I come off as pro Wii/Xbox in many PS3 discussions. I've been accused of being a fanboy of all 3 systems on this forum. It just seems to be the "defenders" of each system don't like my cynical/realistic view of gaming

As for Halo 4. I'd post something, but in all honesty I really don't rate Halo that highly. I feel the same about countless other high profile franchises on consoles though, nothing to do with a dislike of the Xbox (that said, I do have Halo 3 and Halo Wars the latter of which is one of the best games this year IMO) infact on Halo Wars if you read the threads on this forum, I was one of the few enthusiastic posters on the game.

In my flat there are currently 13 Wii games, 18 Xbox 360 games (and 2 Xbox) and 15 PS3 titles. Would seem fairly balaned to me hehe.

what you just said is exactly what i thought when i heard about the Wii.. i called it "this generations slip-n-slide" its something fun to bring out and play with from time to time but nothing i would enjoy day after day. I think this Natal will also be the same way. the difference here is i dont need to by a whole new console to have that time to time fun factor.. M$ is adding it to this current console. so its really a win win for anyone one that is currently playing or looking to buy a console.
