Default PS3 upscaling vs. 360

I use my 360 to play all my DVD's on my 1080p LCD. I am wanting to buy a PS3 and was wondering if it will look better since it says the 80g model upscales all DVD's to 1080p. Of cources I will be buying blu-ray from now on since it looks like the format war is almost over but for my existing collection I just want to know the quality of the PS3 upscaling.

Does the 360 do upscaling I think not but am not sure?

The X360 does upscale as long as you are using VGA or HDMI(for those equipped with it) to hook it up to your TV. It won't upscale as good as the HD-XA2 does, but does a decent job via a hardware scaler. The format war is not necessarily over yet until Paramount and Universal go neutral. There is also a possibility that BD could turn into a niche format as well.

The reason it will not upconvert over component is due to mandates set by the DVD forum that prohibit that. I imagine the PS3 would also not upconvert over VGA as well.

does the ps3 have a component cable option like the xbox360?? I always wondered why I was only able to get 540p over component while using the hd dvd add-on drive...should've gone with a vga cable, but I've already given away my hd dvd add-on...

the PS3 has component options though you have to buy them seperately, any PS2 or PS3 component cables will work. (e.g. walmart, $19.99)

The PS3 does have a component cable option, but you CAN NOT upscale DVD's with them. It requires an HDMI connection for DVD upscaling.

probably the same issue I was having with the hd dvd addon in that it was only being upscaled through component to 540p. If I had the hdmi connection or vga adapter for the premium console, then I'd probably get true 720p or 1080i upscaling.

Yup, all you need is to buy the VGA HD cables for the X360, and the internal scaler chip will take care of upconversion. Keep in mind that while it does a decent job, it still will not do as good of a job as a top rate upconverting stand alone player can do. In other words, you should see an improvement, but don't expect it to look like HD source content.

i have both the ps3 and 360 w/HDMI. i have used both to upscale and i have to say i would give the ps3 the edge on upscaling. it's not better then some stand alone upscaler dvd players or HD media players but it does a fairly good job. after seeing my HDA35 and ps3 upscale i couldn't go back to the 360. infact i simply use my HDA35 for dvd's and only once in a while do i use my ps3 for dvd's.

This is almost why i'm tempted to pick up the HD-XA2 before they officially stop production on them. That was one heck of an upconverter for SD stuff with that Silicon Optix REOS chip. The HD-A1 does an incredible job, but I keep hearing the HD-XA2 does a breathtaking job.

PS3 upscales standard dvd far better than 360 in my eyes. I was able to all the details on PS3, but not on 360.

I think the PS3 is a very good upscaling standard DVD player but I haven't seen the XBox 360. Having read about the XBox 360 standard DVD playback, I would say it isn't even close to the PS3.

but then of course that's more wear and tear on the internal drive on the ps3 as opposed to an hd dvd external add-on. So in the long run, the ps3 will break down due to playing games and blu-ray discs....hope that the dvd drive on the ps3 is included with the standard mfg's warranty!

what version of the 360 are you useing? if you are useing the component version then you are not upscaling. if you are useing the VGA cable then realize the VGA softens the picture so the difference would be even bigger.

not that the ps3 isn't better at upscaling because it definetly is but not by a huge ammount.
