Default A little Price Comparison

Granted everyone is not going to be on the boat I am on but I would guess most of the people on this site have some $$ to throw around (student loans for me so add 5% interest to all my prices) but here is a comparison for what a "high end" PS3 and 360 will run.

PS3: -------------- XBOX 360:
Console-$600 --------------$400
Controller-$50 -------------- $50
HD Connection-HDMI:$20-------component-free
WiFi-Free -------------------$100
Batt & Charger-Free --------- $50
Optical Audio-$15 ------------$15
Online play-Free --------------$50-1yr
HDD-60G -------------------- 20G
Extended Warr.-$100-------- $70

So I guess after it was all said and done the PS3 cost $30 more. Mind you that I bought everything Brick and mortar except the PS3 HDMI cable which is a Monster cable off of ebay. You could probably shed an equal amount on either side online. In another post I said the XBOX ended up costing more but I must have mis-calculated.

Final point: It would cost me another $200 to get an HD DVD player for the 360 and the PS3 has flash memory card slots as well. The 360 has a smaller HDD not that I plan on ever filling it up. No HDMI as of right now, but that fits my system perfectly anyways. Also unless something changes, tack on $50 every year for live and hope PSN stays free.

Once again love them both, just hope maybe this helps people budget for what they want.

.
First off: You should have included the HDDVD drive in there. "High-end will include the most popular accessories.

Second point, you should now assume the "high end" will soon have the 120gb HDD space (360 fans could get a bit nasty about that).

I want to point out that after a few years 360 fans will pay ANOTHER $200 to play online. 4 years to be exact.

So add that and the HDDVD player (additional $400) for the highest end system over the life of the system (or maybe over half the life).

After 4 years the 360 is something like $300 more expensive!! (give or take).

Default I actually do agree with 360 fans, Microsoft is better!!

I'm starting to agree with 360 fans now. Microsoft is a better company. They know how to make the money...nickel and dimeing their customers. "Here buy this, it's all you need"

1 year later -->
"Well, OK we'll include the HDDVD then but it'll cost ya!" "You want HDMI? Hmm, sure thing but it'll cost ya" "Want more than 20GB space? Really? Are you sure about that? I'm sure M$ couldn't see that coming. OK, but it'll cost ya!"

I should work for M$. No wonder Gates and M$ can donate so much money!

who cares? Both systems are comprable. If you like games available for the 360, get that. If you like games available for the PS3, get that. If the games you like are available to both, go with what you can afford. If you like online play, I'd give the edge to the 360.

I'm a 360 owner, and I am really starting to think that the PS3 is the overall better value. I bought the 360 for the better library of games, which are obviously better right now. The PS3's library will expand and get better as the year moves on though.
Now Microsoft is coming out with the black 360, with HDMI and the 120 gig Hdrive. They are going to charge $479 for it. I think this is a big mistake. They should price it at $399, and knock the 20 gig model down to $299. With the PS3 starting out kind of slow, this would really gain some momentum for the 360. For the $479 model, they should really be including a wireless connection, which I don't think they are. That is an extra $99, which puts you only $20 away from the high end PS3 price. Now as a consumer, I only have to pay an extra $20 for a BlueRay player, which is built in? That is kind of a no brainer.
In my opinion, MS is really opening up a can of worms here. They use the argument, that the PS3 is to expensive, but when you take a good look at it, the PS3 is a much better value. Even if MS has to lose a little money on the High end console, it has been reported that they turned the corner, months ago, and are making money on the price point that they have in place now, so why not drive a stake in the competitions heart. It is right there for them to really take a huge leap in the console war, but they are starting to stumble in IMO.

oh i see, you mean like sony saying "yeah the ps3 is the best high-def entertainment system for the money, but if you want to actually play in high-def, you will have to buy your own hdmi cable..that'll cost ya extra...oh wait, you want a bigger harddrive to download movies and stuff? sorry, we don't even offer that upgrade....your controllers internal battery died? go buy a whole new controller instead of being able to just buy a new battery..yah, that'll cost you extra. oh, you actually want a unified online system with easy to setup friends list? hmm, we're not sure how to do that and leave it up to the game developers to provide online service individually, after all, you get what you pay for....nice bang for the buck....

look, if you don't understand that you can actually have more options with the 360, and that giving people more options is a better business strategy that will give you a better customer base, then you should probably go work for sony where you will fit right in....

Don't be a noob. The 360 differs from the PS3 as the 360 doesn't allow third party accessories. You can pick up an HDMI cable for as cheap $15 and You can get a 120gig HDD for Under $100. And Sony's online is working fine now and Home looks to be even more promising than anything out now. The 360 has more hidden charges than you can even list. You are also leaving out the Wi-Fi you have to buy for the 360 and you have to use a M$ certified Adapter, PS3, you can use anything. You can't use old component cables with the 360, or old controllers or old memory cards. PS3 is much more easy to upgrade and much more cheaper. Research before spewing out Xbox fanboyism.

Bottom line... i would rather have my 360 hardwired, and if you don't have the money for the extra's go the PS3 route but you get what you pay for. One example XBL... You also have to ask yourself, do you have the money for the PS3 or the 360 and now a HDTV with the HDMI connection? If someone is going to complain about the $479.00 for the new 360, don't buy it... it's is simple as that. I'm a 360 guy so if I want to play with the big boys there is a price to play.

Hmm lets see the 360 at 599.00 or the PS3 at 799 in Canada both systems have a second controller. Lets see teh X box right out of the box is playable with many many titles the PS3 playable out of the box with almost zero titles. X box you don't have an HD TV no big deal you don't need it for the movie content PS3 no HDTV well you suck cuz we threw in the BR player for the masses I mean the morons who had to have it and wanted to pay more for it. Ya we have no titles but you can watch great movies with it oh you still don't have that HD TV sorry it will look just like your SD DVDs then so you suck so go buy a new HDTV. Yep Sony the better solution LOL not in this lifetime...

Atleast with teh 360 you can choose what acessories you actually want or need unlike the PS3 so many people I know that purchased PS3's did so with no desire to ever buy an HDTV or BR movies they did so based on the games etc that were out for the PS2 and it's following. Of the 20 people that bought them 9 have returned them for 360's and another 4 returned them and bought Nintendo Wii's.

PS3 - HDMI yup.
360 HDMI nope

PS3 - affordable HDD upgrade of my choice. Example 120 GB for $80 or less

360 - 20GB HDD from MS $100

And of course if you bought the CORE when MS put out an abundance of CORE's and not Premiums. That decision to have the 20GB peripheral available (which is needed to play every 360 game) becomes much more clear. Smart move for MS's pocket book, crappy news for the consumer who received or bought a 360 CORE system and wants to have access to every 360 game.

That's what you come up with?

HDMI isn't needed. The only instance I might make use of it with my 360 would be for upscaling DVD's. Other than that, component gives me just as good a picture.

And I won't argue the hard drive aspect, other than stating I have never filled my 20GB drive.

Lets also not forget that the 360 has been out for a year. So you have a choice:

360 with a great library of games, great arcade, great content downloads (tv, movies..etc), great online play, and a great looking future all for $399.

OR

PS3 with better specs in terms of extras (blu-ray built in, wifi built in, memory card readers, larger HDD), free online play, motion controller, downloadable content, and a small library of games currently all for $599.

Its a choice. Noone is wrong for preferring 360 and noone is wrong for preferring the PS3. If I had the time to play more games and didn't have other things I'd rather spend my money on, I'd probably own both. Since I didn't want to own 2 consoles, 360 was an easy choice for me simply due to their xbox live service.

So, we can argue all we want which one is better. Obviously 360 is better for some and PS3 is better for others.

Pretty easy to come up with since I simply stated facts. I'm well aware that the 360 came out a year earlier, but I guess it needed to be said for somebody to read, lol

True, HDMI isn't needed, neither is component, some go with composite. However that isn't my prefered method. I prefer the best PQ and AQ I can get which is why I hooked it up with my $10 HDMI cable from Monoprice

I agree, nobody is wrong for preferring one or the other. We all have different tastes. My tastes include both

Well, I don't think we can compare HDMI and component to composite. HDMI and component CAN be compared though. I obviously don't have a choice with my 360, but having tested with my cable box, HDMI and Component give the same quality picture. I believe having the extra port on my 360 would not make a difference.

Which is why I don't see why so many people are bitching about the rumoured 360 with HDMI. It seems that all it really offers is HDMI and a larger hard drive. In my opinion, thats hardly worth purchasing just for that, when the hard drive will be offered as an add on as well. But.. that's a whole other topic anyway
