What I can say is this; I'd had my PC set to 60hz for years, and then I got this 144hz monitor and naturally set the refresh rate to 144hz. But a couple times when I was making changes, it reverted back to 60hz refresh rate and the monitor felt broken. As far as games go, I definitely don't like 60FPS anymore; I'd rather take 90+ and lower the graphical detail. And yeah I mostly play FPS type games

It all depends on what your GPU can push. I have a 7600k (I think) and a 1070ti so I don't think I'd get very far at 1440p or 4k, but I can run most games at 2560x1080 and get close to 100FPS. In Destiny 2 I get over 120FPS with everything jacked up and it's so crispy
Well my tv (Sony 55" 4k) refresh rate is 120hz BUT my AVR will only pass 4k through at 60hz/fps so I have my output set to 60hz.
My projector will only do 60hz (for 24hz film it triples to 72 hz with or without frame interpolation).

Currently using an Onkyo AVR because my Pioneer Elite was 1st gen 4k and won't pass HDR or 4k greater than 30 fps (even though I vastly prefer the audio on it). I also have a Marantz AVR which IIRC will pass through 4k+HDR at least at 60 but I accidently touched two speaker wires together when moving a surround speaker from 7.1 to Atmos set-up and blew a relay in it and now it is in "protect" mode until I can get it repaired.

To go above 60hz and keep my audio I think I would need a true monitor with display port for video and hdmi to avr for audio. Even though the Sony refreshes at 120 I think the max input it takes is 60hz and ends up doubling for smoothness but I like gaming in my theater room because it is soundproofed from the rest of the house and can use alternate audio sources and also use the projector and play games at 100+ inches (1080p). If I ever end up moving I will certainly take my hobbies into consideration and have a separate dedicated gaming room and dedicated theater room I think.

Until recently getting lucky and getting a new gaming pc I hadn't changed my setup in a long while due to going to Full Frame mirrorless camera and building a solid lens collection and 4k drone video/photo.

My new pc still has a 1070 just like my old one but it has 2 HDMI and 2 display ports instead of 1 HDMI and 3 display ports. With a 6 core cpu with hyperthreading and ddr4 ram though video and photo editing has become much more productive but gpu still is the bottleneck on gaming. My new system also doesn't seem to handle any sort of an overclock or all the bios and voltage settings have gotten to complicated to isolate and tweak. Asus mobo and gpu handle differently than EVGA.
