Default Steam Now Charging Sales Tax

Due to the recent SCOTUS ruling essentially stating that on-line retailers are not necc exempt from charging sales tax

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/06/21/u...merchants.html

Steam has begun charging sales tax as part of it's normal course of business.

KInda sucks but I get it. Much like the uber rich exploit tax loopholes to not pay income tax, we as consumers have been using the on-line loophole to not pay sales tax. Technically (at least in ohio) we are supposed to report our on-line purchases and then pay the appropriate sales tax when we pay our annual taxes but I know of nobody who ever has.

It just sucks to see it go.

The dump I call home, Pennsylvania, has been doing this for years. Netflix, iTunes, ps store, didnít matter to them. They took their share

I've been paying tax on steam for a while. As a small business owner I'm perfectly fine with online sellers having to collect sales tax. Fuck Etsy and Ebay.

Must have been an Ohio thing. We've had sales tax on Steam since I started, and Amazon as well.

Just started in October. Several Websites have started this after the recent SCOTUS decision. Prior to that sales tax only needed to be collected if the company had a physical presence in your state.

I think this has always been the case as long as I've been buying on Steam. In Chicago, we have something on top of sales tax called an Amusement Tax, which is 9% So far the only digital storefront to implement it is PSN but Steam is not far away...

How much is your sales tax? Ours in Dallas (cities can implement their own 1%) is 9.25%

Oh yeah. We even had a soda pop tax here but as soon as it was put into effect people started literally rioting until it got repealed

We also pay income tax too but you wouldn't know anything about that, you lucky dog

Yeah... but you have Billy Goat Tavern!
(The one under Michigan Ave.)

Fast greasy burger and beer. I loved it!

I've never been there but people I've talked to who went back in the day said the experience was exactly like the Saturday Night Live sketch. "No Coke. Pepsi!"

I was there about 20 years ago. Had a hard time finding it (didn't know about the "underground" world.)

Anyway... had to check it out. And it was like SNL sketch. I don't think they were faking (accents). And true, no fries! Just chips.
