Default Unforseen problem with 4k gaming

So recently I have been letting GeForce Experience or whatever it is called pick optimal settings for my games and quite often it chooses 4k resolution and will sacrifice AA and/or ambient occlusion. Most of the time it does look damn sweet with good to great frame rates but there is a problem that keeps rearing it's damn head and that is :
At 4k resolution text boxes / dialogues etc are so damn small I can't read them half the time- hell make that nearly all the time. I game on 55" 4k screen from about 6-8 feet and the text is just to f'ing small so I end up reverting back to 1080 p many times.

JR, you just went with a 4k monitor does that sort of issue show up with a smaller screen but near field gaming?

Not sure If I am ready to give up the comfort of the man cave for a smaller screen yet,

I game in 4K sometimes and don't have that issue. I think most games compensate for it by increasing the hud 200% or something like that.

Never let GeForce Exp choose settings. That shit is garbage. Turn that off and pick your own settings. When I was using the 4kTV, I would always go best possible settings at 60FPS, which may mean 1080. My monitor is 144hz so I now try to get 144FPS, best possible settings.

That is an issue with 4k. Some programs scale so poorly that they are basically unusable. It's very irritating.

My monitor is 2560x1080. I prefer frames over pixels. Since it's a 144hz monitor, I'm looking to get 144FPS out of games. No way my 1070ti is doing that at 4k.

I do both. My man-cave has both a computer desk (with the 21:9 monitor) and my 75" Samsung 4k. My PC is connected to both simultaneously. I generally only keep one going at a time. For gaming, it's always at the desk/monitor. If I want to watch a movie, I'll go into Nvidia Control panel and switch to the TV. Got a cheap wireless mouse and keyboard for the theater recliners.

Yea, not totally satisfied with the nvidia choosing as is but it is a start and I fine tune from there (turn everything back up but aa and Ao and then adhjust draw distance and shadow detail if necc). Mostly it ups resoluton and downs aliasing and occlusions as mentioned anyhow. Some Games I prefer frame rate such as mp and most shooters but in others - many rpgs, platformers, adventure etc fps isn't as huge a deal.
WIth the more recent drivers he 1070ti seems to be doing well - killing the AA which I rarely even notice at 4k rendering gets me pretty close to a solid 60 fps in a lot of games.
The small text bullshit just sucks though - guess it is luck of the draw especially with games a few years old. At least if I was up close on a monitor I could put on reading glasses as I have started to use them more and more as I go presbyopic.
1440p at 60fps deems to be the sweet spot but I just remembered I have the "steam link" still in the damn box - could try that. If not I am having my 'man cave' recarpeted and getting new furniture this weekend could run a line underneath while the old floor is up in case monitor use is better. Would give me an excuse to get one of the Audeze Mobius gaming headsets I have had my eye on.
