Default What's a good AVR from $280-$400

My old Onkyo is finally dying. What's the new hotness? I haven't paid attention in years. $350 would be a good sweet spot. 5.1, no frills. Just want really good, powerful sound. Powering Polk Monitors and a BIC sub.

Speaker config will be 3.1, the only thing hooked up will be a PC, cable box and smart TV features.

This will take care of everything you need and also has built in blue tooth if you end up wanting to stream something from your phone.

So this will match the sound quality of my $500 Onkyo 601?

My opinion has always been that Denon has a sweeter sound vs the cold digital sound, but that aside, the newer has so many new features and improvement over the years. Your 601 is probably 10+ yrs old by now.

Yes but it is 70w / channel vs the 85w your onkyo was depending on your speaker efficency (sensitivity) This may or may not matter.

If you liked your onkyo here is a link to an integra which is the big brother to onkyo much the way that lexus is to toyota or Acura to honda.

https://www.accessories4less.com/mak...r/1.html#!more

It doesn't have 4k upscaling or passthrough like the newer models (it is a few years old and there is a firmware update as well) so it is heavily discounted but if you only need 1080p this is miles ahead of your 601 (it has many extra features you don't need) is more powerful and will be similar to use as it has the same manuf.

It is THX certified as well.

EIther one comes in well under budget and is a step up

Not buying one with 4K passthrough would be a MASSIVE mistake. 4K TV's are the new standard and it's not going away.

For most totally agree, don't know where zkamspy is at. Replacing a non 4k unit but if you want to future proof and also get features not mandated in request here is a great choice in given price area.
I had considered this at one point before I eventually settled on my Marantz unit.

I believe both Denon and Marantz sound is warmer than the Onkyo, the Integra units also have excellent musical properties.

Right now I'm using a just okay sound bar. I miss my 5.1 setup so bad. Eventually. Meaning within 3 years. I'm gonna redo the basement as an actual home theater.

I am considering re-doing my HT and going from 7.2 to 5.2.2 Dolby atmos. I am redoing the carpet, furniture, and walls this fall so while it is stripped bare is the time to re-run everything

If you're already wired for 7.2 wouldn't it make sense to leave that in place and put the 4 ceiling runs for 7.4.2? I feel like 5.2.2 is a side grade. Though it could be I'm not understanding the tech that well.

Both my AVR (Marantz, Pioneer Elite). Will only do a total of seven speakers and 2 subs. Iirc my HT room is ~11x17 and there really isn't a lot of space between my sides and rears. Also a ton of movies are actually in 5.1 or Atmos and even a lot of 7.1 soundtracks are just matrices on the back 2 channels. My brother in law has a Ht albeit a bit bigger than mine and he went with Atmos ceiling speakers vs 7.2 and the effect is much more noticeable imo. Although he is utilizing Bowers and Wilkins and I am using Paradigm speakers.
