Ok so about 5 hours in and overall a really great feeling. They have changed a lot of stuff such as weapons and armor are now upgradeable and have a single slot instead of the same old with runes. No more foraging for herbs, the special attack gauge is and hit streak work different, skill tree is entirely re-done with sub perks included. larger more varied maps the list goes on and on. Overall the changes seem to be a good bit of improvement.
Also the upgrades to the Monolith engine place it on par with Frostbite2 and Cryengine3
The game is essentially the same but has been modified and expanded.
Just as college football and NFL are the same basic game the product is significantly different.

You don't need to spend a dime. You can buy loot boxes with real cash my or earn them. If you buy with cash you can avoid some grinding but not necc. Especially if you do online vendetta missions. You can get awesome loot that way. You never need to go to the marketplace if you don't want to. It really isn't a thing and I HATE microtransactions. Game is better than the first.

i've heard it's much worse (real money --> lots less grinding at endgame) & even if that's not the case why is this even a thing in a single-player game?!

fuck these people, i'm not giving them money

Unfortunately people had to have funny hats and other acoutrements which then turned into accelerated gear / levels /advancement and so on and people just accepted it like baggage fees from an airline so now it is here, there and everywhere. Certainly your right not to by or support a game but man is it good and the loot chests don't matter. I am not at the end but like me I assume you do a bunch of the side quests and find stuff. This time in each region when you find the Ithildin runes (typically 6 per zone) and solve a poem a door opens and you get a Legendary (purple) gear.
Also you can sell stuff for silver coins - silver coins buy loot boxes that are random, gold coins buy loot boxes that have guaranteed good stuff but you don't have to do either if you just play the game you will get all the loot you need. First game for every "stiry-line 15 min quest I did I played for at least 2-3 hours just doing side quests and/ot killing stuff. This game is no different except there is more to do.

FWIW I actually think I would trade optional loot boxes to get rid of the damn herb collecting that plagued the first.
I did a Vendetta mission (avenge some poor on-line schmuck who was killed - no longer have to be on your friends list) and got 2 legendary/purple items an Epic (gold) item and a gem to slot in my weapon since I fulfilled the bonus options (no alarms and stealth kill 4 uruk hai before killing the captain).

game companies get away with doing this shit exactly because people buy the game anyway once they do it. i will play this game when/if there's a cracked version that gets around all this, or not at all

surely you'd agree, though -- the idea of a game company asking you to pay money to advance faster in a single-player game that you've already purchased is repulsive & inherently problematic

I am with 5 on this, had I known about this I would have not bought at launch. I have no issue with free to play games doing this to fund great/good games, I have no issues with online MP games doing this to fund new content to keep the game fresh. I DO have an issue when they do this in a SP game as their new content will be pay to play DLC... This is unacceptable.

I love the game and will get past it but they will not get a single penny out of me for loot chests.

So they came around and closed the store in May and they are going to shut down the market completely in a few days - no more purchasing loot chests so if you were avoiding this due to that I would say now is the time. The game is a lot bigger and more involved than the first one. I am still playing (after a break ) and have yet to finish due to there is so much to do.
