No HDMI Signal from DVD to TV

I just got a Philips 37PFL5322D/37 37" LCD HDTV. I already had a Samsung DVD-VR357 Upconverting DVD and VCR player/recorder with HDMI output. I ordered a couple of inexpensive 10' HDMI cables, which I got today. I am seeing some strange issues between the DVD and the TV now. At first I thought the cables were bad, but I'm pretty sure I have confirmed otherwise. I can play VHS tapes and I can see the menu of the DVD player just fine in 480, 720, and 1080. But when I try to play a DVD, the screen flickers for a second and I get "No Signal". Occasionally it will flicker back on momentarily, but it will not stay. Any ideas?

Are you sure that the DVD player and/or TV support HDCP? Try playing the DVD just at 480 output and see if it works.

I know that the TV has it. I have not seen confirmation on the DVD player yet. I have seen where a couple of other people have had this problem. If the DVD player doesn's have HDCP, is there any way to get around it so I can use the HDMI port?

I have pretty much confirmed the lack of HDCP with some further testing. I was able to get some VHS tapes to play through the HDMI, including a few movies. I have some Disney tapes and figured that if any would have copy protection, then they would. I was right. After a few seconds I got a blue screen and then lost signal. As far as the DVD side goes, absolutely nothing works. I can't get any dvds to work, even ones we have recorded. I also couldn't get any picture or music cds or dvds to play. I can bring up the menu, but as soon as I start the video, I lose signal.

Forget HDMI...it's not the only solution. Use component video connection and you'll be fine.

But the DVD player only upconverts over HDMI (generally)

My question now is this. If HDCP is part of the HDMI spec, then how can this Samsung player advertise HDMI upconverting and not have HDCP? Is it possible that it has HDCP and it just having problems "handshaking" with the tv?
