Hitachi got into some trouble a couple of years back when they were advertising their Plasmas as "True HD" implying they were 1920x1080 when in fact they were only 768X1024...misleading to say the least and it left a bad taste in consumers mouths.......I'm quite sure they have since dropped Plasma production in order to concentrate on LCD production and we get very little feed back on any of thier models. I also haven't seen a Hitachi flat panel TV ad in over a year....I would be cautious at best.

Since it's been over 2 years from this post, have opinions changed on the category each mfg is placed in? Is Visio still the bottom of the barrel or "proletariet"? A few recent posts have given them some credit.

Is LG still in the middle class? Should it be?

Basicially, I am on a budget but like everyone else I want the best for what I can afford and am hesitant to purchase either of theses 2 brands. But I am looking for a 46" for around $900 so these brands give me the most options...I think. Anyway, I'm just overally curious if things have changed in the past 2 years on which brands are considered quality. Thanks.
LGs are the bottom of the barrel when it comes to Plasma screens due to image retention and many, many of their models, LCD and Plasma experience lip-sync issues.

Vizio seems to be a pretty good product, I have not seen too many consumers complaints registered here, although I have noticed that the number has increased recently... bottom line when considering any cheaper set keep in mind it is cheaper for a reason most of which is in the components used and with quality assurance.

Thx for the reply. After much thought, I think I will hold off for a couple of months and save some more money to purchase a better quality brand. I was very close to buying an LG and I'm glad I didn't. I was just excited to get a new tv so I wanted one right away. But in the end I think it will be wise to wait. I have my eyes set on a panasonic tc-p46u1 or maybe even the s1, we'll see. Thanks again.

While not a flaw per se, the price was always a significant drawback. Not to mention the availability, and the inability to replace it if there's a problem.

I'm almost ready to buy, and this seems to be the best deal at bestbuy on an HDTV that meets my requirements (42", 1080p, namebrand)

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Panasoni...&skuId=9244301

Any thoughts? The reviews are largely positive, and the OP ranks Toshibas highly enough.

I would look at the P42S2 instead which is the 2010 model AND it is the replacement for the P42S1 from 2009. That U series model is below the S1 from 2009 because it does not use the better NeoPDP panel the S1/S2 use and the S1 also does not have the anti glare coating either.

Another member bought that same U1 model and returned it for the S1 and reported it was MUCH better. The same will be true for the S2 model being better as well.

Thank you for the info. I will consider the newer model, but the fact that it's currently $200 more than the 2009 one might be a deal breaker :\

Better to spend $200.00 more now than to regret the purchase.

True, true...

Actually, BB has a new model up, P42U2, which looks nearly identical to the one you suggested (P42S2), but for $90 less. Any idea what the difference is?

No anti-glare coating is one thing and I think you would want that. A member here bought the U1 series and returned it for the S1 version last year and said it was much better all around.

For $90.00 get the S2 is my recommendation. You will be glad you did when you divide that $90.00 by the number of years you expect to enjoy the TV.

Yet another thing favoring plasma over LCD when it comes to 3DTVs:

http://blogs.consumerreports.org/electronics/3d-tv/

Click on the video for a visual of the difference. All I can say is that 3D for LCD is worthless after looking at that video IMO.

Thanks to Lee Stewart for posting this elsewhere.
