Default Need advice on LCD: philips vs samsung

Ok, so I have been researching LCD's for a while and I have found two LCDs that are in my price range($600-900) Best Buy has the {Philips - Ambilight 37" Flat-Panel LCD HDTV 37PF9631D/37} for $899 and Walmart has the {Samsung 32" Widescreen LCD HDTV w/ Built-in Digital Tuner, LN-S3238D} for$850 the only thing is that the philips is the display model and the black casing (cabinet, I believe is the term) has been removed. which is why the thing is so cheap. Anyone have any good advice on which of these would be the better buy, are the picture qualities comparable?? any wisdom?, Im a novice on the subject.

i own the exact model of philips you are looking at - we love the LCD and have had no problems and going on close to 3 months of owning. however - ours has all if its parts. tell me what you mean by "cabinet" when you look at the pic i enclosed - do you mean the glossy black part of the LCD? or does not this picture even show what you are referring to?

yes, it is the glossy black border around the screen, its gone, the guy at best buy said that the buyer found it like that out of the box and returned it. It looks ugly like that but I could get over it (or possibly a new part from philips) the picture quality looks great in the store, Im just worried about buying a floor display model that has been sitting in a store all this time.

if not - i would stay clear - just my opinion

almost seems like an electrical hazard not having that face plate on that philips

I believe that the guy at best buy said that they would still honor the manufacturers warranty, whatever that is. I dont really know much abot manufacturers warranties vs. the warranty you can get for the store. I have a feeling that best buy wont let you return an item that has already be returned, though. its a shame because it looks like a great LCD and its a great price, but its a gamble.

$899 for a 37" isn't that great of a deal.

It's going to look ugly for the rest of its' life as well.

I would pass.

My $.02.

^^ What would you consider a good deal for a 37"? (assuming all its parts are there) or are you referring to the display model only?

For about $1000-$1200 you can get a Panasonic 42'' HDTV Plasma with no Tuner. If you have Cable/SAT what do you need a tuner for.Look for deals like that if you want to save money.

You can get a 37" Vizio from Sam's Club for $799. I have a 32" and it's an awesome set.
