Default To LCD or not to LCD, that is the question!?

I've been fighting over wether to get a CRT HDTV or a LCD HDTV.. main reason im favoring the LCD is because of its high resolution fixed pixel which can display true 720p and since i'll be getting the nex-gen consoles i feel its important that i get a TV that can display true 720p..

I have a question about 480i/p singnals however, how does the LCD handle them? does it upconvert that singnal to like 720p!?!? if so how does it look?!

I've been favoring the Samsung 32" widescreen LCD HDTV(LN-R329D) which of course has a fixed pixel resolution of 1366x768, 3,000:1 contrast!, 500cd/m brightness, built in tuner and a 8ms response time!!!....yet i havent read much or any reviews or opinions on this LCD.. its almost always talk about the sharp's LCD's.. i was looking at some Sharp's(online) and most of them have a 800:1 only contrast!!!??!? .. i dont want something bigger then a 37"(thats my max) yet i havent found a sharp that has more then 800:1 contrast and is a 32" with a 8ms response time..

i even came across a site(forgot its name) that sells HDTV's i guess its pretty popular and it stated one of the sharps had a 4000:1 contrast yet when i went to the sharpusa.com website that same model stated a 800:1 only !???.. i also notice that only a selected few of sharps LCD's have the 4000:1 contrast but i notice those are the 40" or more LCD's which i cant get since its over 37"...

Anyway other then that thats about the only thing i have concern about LCD's.. are their any other models that i should rather be looking into then the Samsung one?! which impresses me with its 32"(just the right size) 8ms response time! and 3000:1 contrast(second highest to sharps 4000:1 i've ever read)

thanks guys!!

The contrast of 3000:1 on that Samsung sounds like the Dynamic contrast which is equal to about 800:1 on the Sharp.

If you are going with the 06 models the Sharp 37D40U will have a CR of 1200:1 and a response time of 6ms at 1366x768 and the NEW multi pixel technology panels. The Sharp 37D90U will have a CR of 1500:1, 6ms RT on a full 1080p panel (1920x1080)

I have the Sharp LC-37D6U and it has a response time of less than 12ms, It was tested and had a response time around 6ms. The 800:1 contrast still gives a good black level.

If you are looking at 37" models the Sharp will be the best choice, other 37" models you may want to look at are the Toshiba and JVC. If you go with a 32" model the Sony V32XBR1 is the Best out there.

wow really!!. see i just learned something new.. thanks! i tell ya ever day im learning something newer and newer about all this HDTV crap lol..

yea the 3000:1 on the samsung is "dynamic" as it states it on their website.. so 3000:1"dynamic" is equal to 800:1?!?!.. hhmmm.. what about the other sharps which have a 4000:1 contrast ratio... is that dynamic or what?

and here i was thinking the samsung is awesome at 3000:1 with a 8ms time lol.. i'll have to look into sharp now.. i kinda had a funny feeling they where number one for LCD's... i know for sure im looking for one for a response time less then 12ms(which it seems most LCD's come with) i rather have 8ms or heck even better 6ms!!.. and i know the contrast ratios are "key" for LCD's since that determines the amound of black...i'll check out that sony 32" as well thanks!.. its so funny how the prices increases so much from a 32" to a 37"... if i cant afford a 37" i wouldnt mind the 32" but im still fighting over a CRT or LCD

any other informative stuff will be extremely usefull.. thanks guys

p.s.
i was just wondering why is it that on the sharpusa.com website those sharp models(37D40U for example) dont state 1200:1 but 800:1!!??.. i was looking at them online and almost every single one states 800:1 only the 40"+ state 4000:1 and thats a massive jump from 800:1?!?! werid..

your right..i re-reading and re-looking at the sharp website it states the 32" LC-32D4U has a 4000:1"dynamic" CR.. so obviously it beats the samsung, though it doesnt specifically say whats the response time, it says "less then 12ms" LOL..

but im wondering..why are there soooo many models of the same kind.. 32D4U, 32D6U, 32D5U etc..etc.. i mean do they need to make that many model..im assuming they are all exactly the same with the ONLY difference being the way the actual TV looks(placement of speakers etc..) correct me if i am wrong please..

damn looking at those prices for the Sony one is crazy..that sucker sells for over $2500 clean...and converting that over to CAD is beyond my budget....might just have to stick at looking at the sharps...thanks again

I have the 26" Samsung LCD and I think the black level is good. I am not sure how well it handles video games as I don't play enough to give any feedback there. The pics on the HD channels are good but a lot of standard def channels have a poor picture quality. I think that is the case with about any LCD though.

thats one thing i kinda heard and read about is non-HD channels dont look that good on LCD's due to their fixed pixel..so they gotta convert that low 480i resolution(240p pretty much lol) into a 720p image(since LCD's always display progressive scan they cant display interlace)..thats a pretty massive jump from 240p to 720p...but since im looking for a HDTV maining for gaming(on the next gen consoles) i dont mind that sacrifice... i'll be watching all my DVD's on it too and HD channels..i dont watch much TV anyway as it is mostly my wife, shes the TV addict lol.. but as if she will tell the difference hahaha!!

I've seen over at EBgames the Xbox360 being displayed and playable with a Samsung 23" LCD.. i must say i looked into the specs on that LCD and its pretty standard stuff.. 12ms, 1366x768, 3000:1 dynamic constrast..and the games looked simply beyond amazing!!!!!, the detail, the clarity, the picture quality even the smoothness of 720p blew me away...at first long time ago when i first saw that i swore that was a plasma screen LOL.. boy was i ever wrong..

I just bought the Sharp LC32D4U and feel it is a great performer. I am coming from an older CRT ( Sony Trinitron ) and really like the picture and look of the LCD's. So far, my XBox looks awesome on it. My vote is for LCD!

Just my 2 cents....

The D4U has the built in tuners and comes in black instead of silver. It also has the speakers on the side as opposed to some of the others that have the speakers on the bottom.

The D4U is definitely "up there".

The Sharp D6U, and D4U series (Sept 2005) replaced the D7U and D5U series (March 2005). The biggest difference in the newer series is a newer panel and faster response times (less than 12ms) NO DVI input, and TV Guide.

The D6U, and D4U are the precurser to the 2006 models.

I think Sharp did make to many different models!!

too many models? no freaking kidding.. lol!

so let me understand this.. the D7U and D5U WHERE REPLACED by the D6U and D4U correct?..

so the D6 and D4 do not have DVI inputs nor TV guide?... but they have faster response time(less then 12ms).. in that case i'll favor the D6 and D4 then.. no DVI inputs isnt a big deal for me nor is TV guide, but faster response time is always a plus!

This is correct, it's funny you would think Sharp would go up with it's numbering rather than down??

Anyway my 37D6U is the BOMB!! NO ghosting, NO lag in response, Blacks are very good, super shadow detail, awesome color with true skin tones. I used the DVE disk for adjusting picture. I will be getting my set ISF calibrated hopefully just before the Winter Games start.

This is our 3rd LCD set we bought when we went HD back in December. First was the LG-32LX1D, then traded it for the Panasonic 32LX50 which was a great set, but the wife and I wanted to go bigger after having it for 25 days so we took it back and got the Sharp which was the best move we could had made.
