Default Exsisting Customer Upgrades - How To

Hello All,

I am sure there are old threads that apply to this, I just wanted to give an update to the DISH retention process. The threads I found were not very explanitory.
1. I am a huge DISH fan and like thier line up
2. I want a HDDVR Vip722 and I do not want to pay for it.

If these also apply to you, call the customer service line.
I could give you the Customer retention line, but..... It would do you no good. Why? The customer service guy will not cancel your service! He will offer you a bogus deal. HOLD OUT! Tell them you want to cancel! BE STRONG!! They will transfer you to their cancelation center and the guys that can deal!!! At this point DON'T HOLD BACK!!

I told them that I loved DISH service but would not pay for a DVR and was willing t go elsewhere for the product. IMMEDIATELY I was offered the VIP 722 for two rooms and a two year contract. I should have balked at the 2 year contract, but that was as good as the deal offered to new customers. PLUS, DISH has a sweet contract payoff deal that s prorated at $10 a month.

Understand, this process is a way for them to keep those customers willing to go elsewhere and save money on those to weak to stand up to them. Seems reasonable to me!

Are there not only 2 options? Buy it outright or lease it?
So you are getting 'lease free' too?

he probably means that he got around the upgrade fee... which is $200 for a VIP722

Default It WORKS!!

It worked for me!. The tech will be here tuesday to switch everything out. (and bringing a 20$ HDMI cable) I was also told LEASE FREE! and their waiving the 5$ "no landline fee" as i have ethernet jacks wired behind my entertainment center. It was just like the original post states: They offered me a reduced fee of 125$ for the 722 and I told them I still wasn't happy. I was then transfered to yet another department and the lady told me I "qualified" for a 100% free upgrade! (I too told them I was pleased with the service, but Direct TV would give me all of this stuff free). Oh, and one more thing, my initial contract had been fulfilled and I did have to enter into a new 2 year contract

I did the same thing.. for the HD upgrade.

I heard that you can hold out on the contract.. I had an easier setup since I was looking at Comcast who has no contract and free install... but I am weak and didnt resist the commitment... locked in for 24 months...

But I did skip the install and setup fees that they wanted me to pay for the past year (that i've been trying to get hd).

I made good use of this info to get a good deal on an upgrade to a HD-only package. As expected, you have to get transferred to a customer retiontion rep to get anywhere so just tell the first person you talk to that you are cancelling.

Then the dealing starts. They will likely offer reduced upgrade/installation fees. Just hold out untill all of it is waived. Also confirm that there will be no additional leasing charges for equipment.

Then work on the programming you want. You can switch to a HD-only package for $29.99 a month and add locals to that for $5/month. The HD-only package has a new customer offer of three months for free so ask for that too and they will give it to you (spread out over the term of the contract in three separate credits).

I stopped there but you can probably also get a few months of some premium channels for free if you're interested.

So, all said, I now have the HD-only package with locals (which should also be HD if available) and the corresponding SD channels for my second TV, a new HD receiver with an average savings of almost $7/month over the 24 month contract when compared to my existing SD programming package (AT100+locals). BTW, I did see that some have also been sucessful getting this reduced to 18 months so you can ask for that as well.

One final suggestion. Before you end the call, make sure the CSR sumarizes all of the agreed upon items including the free 3-months because they need to enter all of the proper offer codes into your account for you to be credited properly. It may help to have a checklist handy containing all of the items you are asking for.

I usually tell any customers to completely cancel service and start a new account using, say, a spouses name and a cell phone number. They get all the benefits of a new customer.
