Default 722K replacement

Purchased a used VIP722K on ebay to replace a 722 that won't turn on. I'm guessing there is the long, drawn out process of talking to someone at DISH, rather than being able to take the smart card out of the old one and putting it in the new one, and firing it up??

Don't know till you call.

Cards are "married" to the box based on serial number. (back in the old days)

When you state "turn on", do mean no power? If so... that's a totally different problem.

Try this on the one that would not turn on.....Press and hold both the power and reset buttons for 15 seconds, wait till the receiver responds, if it does nothing after 2 min, then it is dead.

And trying to get dish to restore an old used 722K, would be like pulling teeth on a T-rex, they want you to buy the new hopper system now.

I would have bought a new one (722K) from a reparable source, and not a used one from flebay, you don't know what programming has been purchased and not payed for on the card or the units hard drive.

By "turn on", I mean the green light light, and the fan runs. After about 20 seconds, the green light goes off, and the colored lights below it, flicker, and go off. It still hums and stays warm, but nothing happens.

OK, if you waited more then 10 min, then it's toast, it could be the hard drive, I have seen this kind of problem, but the correct type and model drive is hard to find, it has to be the exact one or it will not see it and finish booting up.

Is the dead one leased or did you buy it?? If leased then they will send a new one, or a hopper, if you bought it, then it's up to you to get it fixed.

We have four. Three are leased that have given us no trouble. One is purchased. Guess which one this is.

If the 722 hard drive is dead, the receiver will revert to VIP222 mode with a 2 day guide etc. So, if it does not boot, it is a deeper problem.

I have seen some 722's just sit there waiting for the hard drive to kick in, replacing the hard drive sometimes will fix this.

Since he owns this unit, he should try disconnecting the hard drive (power and SATA cables) and see what goes on, if the unit does not detect a hard drive it then may revert to a 222 , if this works then look at the type/brand/model number of the drive and replace it with the exact type.

Also with the unit open he can check for DC power on the hard drive cable to see if the power supply took a dump.(do NOT look for power at the switching supply unless you know what you are doing)
