Default Newbie with DirectTV DVR question

Hi All,

What a great site this is! Anyway, I am doing my research before buying a HD TV and was suprised to see that there is a Tivo upgrade required for HDTV.

My question is: Does this apply to Directv With Tivo as well?

So in order to fully enjoy HDTV with direct tv and Tivo I have to do the following?

1) Upgrade my DIsh to an HDTV capable dish.
2) Upgrade my DirectTV service to receive HDTV broadcasts.
3) Upgrade my DirectTV Tivo service because ??????

Thanks In Advance

I'm not aware of any Tivo requirement for HDTV from D. Only if you wish to record in HD do you need to upgrade your DVR. Yes you need a triple LNB Phase 3 dish to receive HD from D. Also a good UHF antenna if you wish OTA HD. Yes again, you need to upgrade your service to the HD Package if you want D's HD offerings. Keep in mind, it is said that the dish is changing yet again to a larger 5 LNB model soon. The receivers will also be changing to MPEG4 models. You may want to wait a while before upgrading. Keep reading this and other forums to keep up with what's going on.

And if you want HD TiVo, it's another $1,000.

That $1,000 would get me a new DirecTV DVR with Tivo, and the only advantage is that I could record in High Def?

Newbiew Question #2, Why cant the standard DVR record HiDef? Does it not recognize the higher resolution?

Good point about waiting, sounds like DTV hasnt quite got there act together when it comes to HD.

Actually the HD-DVR with Tivo is now $699.00 at both Bestbuy and Circuit City. Around $450.00 on Ebay. Also when Directv upgrades your zipcode for MPEG-4, this equipment will be upgraded/replaced for free.

An SD-DVR doesn't have enough horsepower or memory and can't demodulate QAM.
