A normal multi-switch has one output cable per tuner (which means two cables for a DVR) and works by allowing each tuner to specify (via voltages and tones on the cable) which LNB it needs to connect to. All the transponders on that LNB are then piped down that particular cable. An SWM uses just a single wire that is connected to multiple tuners by normal splitters, much as cable TV is distributed through a home. With an SWM, each tuner tells the SWM which transponder it needs, rather than just which LNB, and only the signal from the transponder is put on the cable.

I had to tell you guys this one. Today I had a install for one HDDVR in my bedroom. When the installer got here I told him where the box was going. I let him know that he would need to run another line from the basement to the box upstairs. As the box I currently had there was just a D12 box. He asked what other boxes I had in the house (hr21 livingroom, DVR40 TIVO box). He asked if I was going to upgrade the box in the playroom to a new DVR. I said yes and asked why. He said that he could today install a SWM at my house and that I would need to upgrade the DVR box to a H22 or H23 . I had told him that I heard about the SWM, but he told me that he had the newer version.

How would the splitter function if you were putting together multiple receivers?

Default Daniel Deronda

Daniel Deronda is a novel by George Eliot, first published in 1876. It was the last novel she completed and the only one set in the contemporary Victorian society of her day. Its mixture of social satire and moral searching, along with a sympathetic rendering of Jewish proto-Zionist and Kaballistic ideas has made it a controversial final statement of one of the greatest of Victorian novelists.
The novel has been filmed three times, once as a silent feature and twice for television. It has also been adapted for the stage, most notably in a production in the 1960s by the 69 Theatre Company in Manchester with Vanessa Redgrave as Gwendolen Harleth.

Default TV Picture Quality with single line.

Earlier this year, I had an installer here adding another HD DVR. He could only run one line to the TV and HD DVR, so he set up a single line LNB to run the entire house. Well, I had full functionality of all HD DVRs and all TVs. But, I noticed a slight drop in picture quality than what I had before. So I had the installer come back out and reinstall my original configuration. I am happy with the picture quality I am now getting, but I have limited use of one HD DVR.

At the time this was done, the installer said that this configuration was not approved by Direct TV. This was in January, and since then DTV has approved the single line concept.

Has anyone else noticed a difference in picture quality with the single line concept? I would like to add HD DVR multi-room viewing capability, but after that experience, I am not sure. I value picture quality more than flexibility.

The first method is the one I prefer. This is where the Power Inserter is located AFTER the SPLITTER and behind a receiver. However the only drawback to this method is that if the PI is unplugged it will make all the receivers in your house go SFSS (Searching For Sat Signal). It is VERY important to NOT plug our receiver or the PI into a power strip/surge protector. I have seen numerous service call solved by simply plugging it directly into the wall.
Hi,
Does the PI need to be installed on the cable that goes to the red power pass terminal on the splitter ?
The splitter is a SWS-4
I just got an install done and the PI is not installed on the red power pass terminal and everything seems to work fine, for now........
Thanks

I upgraded Friday to a HD DVR and my basement is finished and almost impossible to get the second line. Installer said I could try and call for SWM and get my other 3 boxes upgraded to a D12. I spent about an hour on the phone and with a supervisor and they said that I can not request this equipment.

Any suggestions on how to request the upgrade or get it.

Thanks

Did you ask "why" you could not request this upgrade?

I called in July or August of 2010 and asked for the system where I could watch a show in one room, that I had recorded in another (not knowing at the time that it was called SWM or Whole House Viewing).
The CSR said "No problem, we'll schedule a tech to come out next week and get that set up for you."
Had she said "You cannot request this service." I would have asked "Why not?"

Especially since DTV is advertising the heck out of the "Whole House DVR Viewing" the last few months.

You can't request an SWM upgrade. You CAN request an upgrade to WHDVR. That will include an upgrade to SWM, and all the receivers will be swapped out if they are not SWM compatible. You will also get the DECA boxes that enable WHDVR. Be sure to request the Cinema Connection Kit as part of the upgrade. It connects everything to your internet router for Video on Demand and other features.
I believe the current price for the WHDVR upgrade is $200. There is also a $3 additional monthly fee.

Anyone know why the pics in the original post don't show up? It says I don't have access to open them. I am trying to learn about how this setup works.

I too couldn't see the pics in the first post but found it reposted at the site below where I COULD see the pics and diagrams. Since I don't know this forum's rules on links, I'm posting this so you can't just click on it to go to the site where the post is reposted. If you can't see the pics, go to highdefinitionblog dot com/?page_id=408 Since I can't post URLs directly being a newbie, you'll have to add the www before this and substitute a period for the dot. Hopefully you'll figure it out.

I just got two HR21's to replace my HR20's mainly because I've upgraded to the Pany 3d plasma tvs and I also want to get whole home dvr service on Directv. I currently have a slim line Ka/Ku 5 lnb dish. I plan to buy a kit on ebay that includes the swm lnb, 8 way swm multi switch, and power supply. I plan to just replace the existing lnb with the swm lnb without disturbing the position by tightening all the adjustment bolts before I swap it out. Let me get this straight. The swm lnb and the 8 way swm multi switch both need a power line run them. Can I have the swm 8 way multi switch inside the house right behind a receiver using one of the existing rg6 lines to the single input then just run another to the other HR21. I still need to buy a DirecTV DECABB1MR0-01 Internet Broad Band Deca Adapter, right? Any other procedures I need to do to get this working?
