Transferring film to digital format has nothing to do with up-conversion. As someone already made a point, term up-conversion should be used in terms of digital formats. Most of Hollywood movies made these days are still shot using film and later transferred to digital. Film content from decades ago can be processed the same way.

Default Fox Soccer Channel in HD

FSC will shortly begin broadcasting in HD - they are advertising it everywhere. Has anyone heard whether DirecTV or Dish will be offering it?

Ditto BBC America which has been available elsewhere since last summer?

Default Can't stand Standard Def

I was recently on vacation and when visiting my friends who had Verizon FIOS service, I noticed they received AMC, IFC, Sundance in HD. I can't watch movies in Standard Def. I e-mailed Directv asking them when these will be offered in HD and will pass on their reply.

Below is their reply. A link that was included (that I can't post yet here as a newbee) references a satellite launched last month which will allegedly increase their HD capacity by 50% sometime in the "first half of 2010."

Why the hating on DirecTV?

Yeah they don't got a lot of HD channels the some others offer, but they also got channels that others don't have as well. If your making a list of HD channels and which providers carry them, you will most likely see most of the big name companies not carrying 40-60 different channels.

Just seems a little misleading. As if there is another provider who offers every single one of these channels + the ones DirecTV does offer. Its really a combination of HD channels offered by several different providers, compared against a single one.

Also keep in mind that some HD channels, and channels all together had been bought by providers so they can be the only one to provide that channel in HD.

TWC in the Cleveland market is only lacking 4 HD channels that Dtv carries: Fuel, The 101, NFL, and HD Net. On the other hand TWC, though not carrying ALL the HD feeds in this master list, is still carrying some quite popular and highly demanded channels: MSNBC, AMC, Travel, Vesus, IFC, G4).

Turned on the TV and my major gripe about DirecTV is gone. MSNBC is now being broadcast in HD.

I assume the FSC referred to here is Fox Soccer Channel? That is now in fact in HD on DirecTV as of last week. Looks great too.

Now, if they could get AMC added at least. Watching MadMen in standard letter box is awful.
