I believe this has 3 hdmi inputs so you can run the hddvr directly into the receiver but you will need an optical for sound and another hdmi from the receiver out to the tv or you can just keep it the way you have it and run an optical to the receiver.

If the 5100 cant decode audio- would it be useless to run the HDMI from the Sat rec. to the ONkyo - Would I still get all the audio if I just run an optical cable to the Onkyo from the Sat unit and the hdmi from the Sat to my TV ???? Thanks again

You could run the HDMI to the tv directly, but you miss one of the advantages to that Onkyo - the receiver has a built in HDMI switch. It really doesn't matter whether you use optical or digital coax - both will work and provide dolby digital sound. Using the switch will reduce the amount of button pushing
The problems with this receiver is that it wont get dolby 7.1 off of HDMI, but Directv doesn't broadcast in 7.1, so that's irrelevant if you don't go blu-ray. A second problem is that there's no program code for the std directv remote that enables all functions. |

I recently setup the Onkyo 7100 setup, and you put the HDMI out and connect it to the TV and hook your HDMI cable from the directv box to one of the HDMI inputs (mine was prelabeled CABLE/SAT so i used this one).
That is, if the 5100 has a similar receiver. |

Don't pay big bucks for the optical cable. 10-$12 should be right..

Unfortunately, it wont - it's HDMI pass through only. All dolby digital audio has to be by a separate toslink or digital audio connection. You won't get any sound out of HDMI with this system other than out of the tv speakers.

Yeah, the next model up receiver is awesome, but only if you're really worried about lossless audio from a high end blu-ray player. The 5100 Onkyo is a great system for the price, and will output the 5.1 directv audio at a fraction of the price of the higher end system, you just need to hook up a hdmi and an toslink or coax cable. I use a regular coax without any problems from the orange digital audio coax out to the 5100, I've got a hundred spare coax cables. I use toslink for my PS3 and Xbox 360.
