Apparently we dont matter to d*tv
You encountered a bad customer service guy, but I wouldn't assume he speaks for DTV, since if, in fact, 4% of DTV's customer base is active online, that's huge. Can you imagine a company being happy about pissing off 4% of its customer base? Can you imagine a company being "OK" with a 4% drop in revenues? Neither can I. And DTV isn't crazy. So they made this move not because they felt they could afford to lose the 4% of their customers who are active online, but because they believed that only a tiny, tiny portion of that 4% would be seriously unhappy, and that the potential increase in revenue was worth the risk.

He told me they reserve the right to change programming and charge extra whenever they see fit.

This blew me away:

He said that they had received very few complaints about the change in packaging and that it didnt bother most subscribers. I told him that judging by forums online, it seemed that many of their customers were very displeased.

Nice to see being a loyal customer pays off. I was told that I had the option of getting the 3 months free and then paying, or paying a large fee to cancel my subscription, otherwise we had nothing else to discuss.

Its nice to know they value their customers satisfaction, especially when Im paying $80 a month
Welcome to the board. As your post points out, most posts to forums like these are complaints from unhappy people. Everything you say and do in business will make someone unhappy. It comes with the territory. Either pay the charge or give up the programming. I chose to give up the programming. You choose whichever you like.

If he's like myself, and he doesn't have any MPEG4 equipment, then DTV has him grandfathered. We will continue to get the same HD channels for the same price.
