Too Good To Be True!

If you have older E86 or similar and on lowest tier family package with HD upgrade, WATCH OUT! I endured a six hour nightmare yesterday that ended up with the "new" H20 being deactivated at 11 PM and my old MPEG2 relit and back in business. Trouble is, their shell game takes away ESPNHD and more when you "upgrade." I would have to pay an extra $13 a month to get back to where I had been for years on the old MPEG2 plans. They don't tell you this up front and "apologize for inconvenience" when confronted with their bait and switch tactics. They also got nasty saying "all sales final" and threatened to ruin my credit with a $500 termination charge. Eventually they backed down to a "three day grace period" and will send me an empty box to ship the H20 back with no harm no foul. They told me to keep the new 5L dish at no charge. It took five of their people spread across three calls over a six hour period to get me a semblance of what I had before at the same price. DO NOT believe the glowing testimonials of 38 HD channels for the same price. It is a lie. If you have an upgrade scheduled, cancel it while there is time and be happy with what you have. The more people who keep MPEG2, the longer they will have to wait before shutting it down. Dig in! --Tom in Tucson

uhhhh, what?

You are encouraging people to stay with the older mpeg2 equipment?
Are you okay sir? Do you need to speak with someone?

thomash85715 10-26-2007 11:59 AM

check the facts

In an insane society a sane man would appear insane. I don't appreciate being attacked for speaking the truth and the facts as they happened to me personally. If the lemmings want to all run over the cliff, they are free to do so. I choose to remain where I am if so-called progress consists of giant steps backward that raid my wallet.
There is nothing supreme about HD. It's only television. It's not a cure for cancer. It's mainly for rich people with more money than brains and that is OK. I am using my brain to make a decision about allocating my limited financial resources. I provided true facts previously not on the record about MPEG4 pricing so people can make up their minds not in a vacuum.

strange , my package has not changed in price in over a year since getting the mpeg4 equipment installed....been pauing the same all along , the only change for now is the new package in dec , that i have seen
and its only like 5 bucks more a month ...i am by no means a rich person , but i figure if i spent the cash a tv i might as well get it used for what it does.. just me ...

Sorry it turned out so bad for you but I have had no problem changing over to HD and when my parents moved and upgraded everything went smooth for him as well.

You may not think that HD is a big deal but if it isn't why are you making such a fuss about it. I love having my programming in HD as does my roommate and my parents. I am nowhere near being called rich but when I got in my new house my roommate and I decided we wanted to go HD because we are technology geeks and figured if we have such nice TV's why not watch the best programming we can. As for your comment about more money then brains I think I would have to disagree since both my roommate and I have Bach. degrees, I am going for my masters and he will have his Masters in Electrical Engineering in a little over a month. To you it may not be a big deal but after a long week at work I like to relax and watch my favorite shows in the highest quality video available.

I wish people would read the whole thing and not zero in on one word or phrase. Obviously people who lead the pack as early adopters of anything are smart and inquisitive. The issue I have is with the predatory practices of a business that has different plans for different zip codes or that test how stupid they think the customer is. If other forum members got a different and better deal than me, why am I bad person for pointing it out? If supposedly smart people can be duped out of their money by a faceless monolithic bird in the sky, there is something unfair about that. The old package was fine; it should not have been changed and I should have been told the pitfalls to make informed decision. None of that happened. To keep this on topic: the picture on some of the "new" channels was fine, but some were obviously upconverted and second rate. "Wanting a thing to be so does not make it so" as spoken by T'Pal on Enterprise. We all want this MPEG4 to be worthy of the promise. But that does not make it worthy.

truba11a 10-26-2007 01:25 PM

wut the hell is this person talking about? the old package had 10 mpeg-2 HD channels for $9.99, the new package in total for $15 has like 60 mpeg-4 HD channels...your confused

dcrews 10-26-2007 01:34 PM

I wish I knew....

There aren't different plans for different zip codes..

The only thing your zip code does is say what locals you can get and weather you can get them in HD or not....

That and which local Sports Network you get.

Technology is ever increasing. Go with it dude, don't be cheap.

If you want to keep up, you gotta pay, so move on. MPEG4 rules.

Otherwise, you can sit at home and play with your Betamax VCR on a 25 year old 19" Zenith.

Munkey 10-26-2007 02:01 PM

Not sure what he's been smoking but I don't think I want any of it.

I actually found a 19" Zenith in my parents basement when I helped them move. I think it was only 20 years old though.

Intellectual Dishonesty Reigning Supreme

In insane society a sane man would appear insane and the postings over the last few hours prove it. Direct Quote from DirecTV just now on the phone: "There is no $5 extra HD package. There is only the ones we have had all along. On december 15, there will be a $5 extra charge for HDNet because we are moving it to the extra package. You never had ESPNHD in your old package." Even though I did actually watch it for over a year. So stop attacking me for relating the facts as they have happened to me. Stop making fun of me like you are superior. If you all want to keep spending and spending more money and feeding the machine, go ahead. It encourages them (DTV) to increase price and take away product. I reserve the right to express my opinion on the topic. Many have related similar problems with D* telling multiple tales at various times. This is just another in a long string. At no time have I made any references to any other posters specifically or their sanity. Stop abusing me with personal attacks.

Blackz06 10-26-2007 02:41 PM

What bait and switch are you referring to. At Directv.com it is VERY clear that ESPNHD and ESPN2HD and others will not be included in the "Family Plan". I'm assuming that $13 increase is for upgrading to the "Choice Plan", which is a good deal as it is normally $20.

Don't want to come off as a know-it-all, but that's what places like these forums are for. You could of just posted a topic and see what kinds of things to expect from subs with similar experiences and you would of made a more informed decision. Sorry it didn't go too smoothly, but you will be missing out on some great content available through D*.

Me, I can justify $13 for about 50 more HD channels, clearly you can't, so happy viewing your 10 HD channel. Hope you come to the realization that it really is worth it.

Launching new birds costs big bucks. So your going to see an increase in price.

I understand 100% what you are trying to say. On the other hand your opinion is balanced on what you believe the new service is worth. You dont like what your getting for the extra money. If that is the case then you are doing the right thing in going back to your MPEG2 lineup.

I for once in a long time, am not bothered by my bill for TV service. I feel I am getting my monies worth.......thats just me.

Also as for the MPEG4 picture quality. You are going to have to give it time. These networks have to start producing their shows in HD, not upconverting their SD collection. They are getting there......the "world" is going HD
