Angry Should I go to HD Directv?!?

I have been contemplating going to directv HD programming. However they tell me I have to pay a couple hundred for thier reciever, upgrade dish, and then additional monthly cash for programming. What a rip, and to think these are the same people who give you the regular satellite equipment (recievers and a dish) for free! Hard to believe the HD gear is not just something they are milking for more bucks plus don't forget some extra hefty dollars monthly for programming. I tried Voom and go basically the same crappy deal. Allot pay for the 1 tv in my house that can handle HD, everyone else is happy with regular old basic satellite, we don't even pay for premiums. So what to do? I guess my only other alternative would be to somehow run some sort of line from the roof antenna to get regular local brodcast HD? How is this done, if the only cables coming in are my directv coax lines. Will I still need to buy an HD reciever too?

Here is what I would do if I was in your situation. If you want to keep Directv tell them about VOOM's deal that they are running right now, $1 install fee, $5 per month receiver rental fee and see if they will bring down the price of adding HD. If your current satellite receiver does not have the ability to receive OTA HD then you would need another receiver. If you make a deal with Directv make sure the receiver they send you will be able to accept another coax input from an off air antenna so you can get the local HD broadcasts.

Another route you can go is VOOM or Dish Network. VOOM has alot of HD channels but no locals, pay per view or NFL Sunday ticket, if that's important to you. I don't know that much about Dish but it seems as if they are about the same as Directv, more or less.
