Default HD Receiver OTA (without DTV) Question

I'm glad I found this great resource. Our HD set is one the way, and I'd prefer to hook up to DTV over Dish because of poor service from Dish several years ago.

But since I have to purchase a receiver for DTV (new TV does not have a built-in), would it cease to act as an OTA HD receiver if I discontinued DTV in the future?

One manufacturer's manual says that I'd only loose the downloaded channel guide, but the box would continue to receive OTA, but another (Samsung) said nothing. The sales people at CC seem to think that the box is useless without a subscription. (That, of course, makes Dish look good, since monthly rates are comparable, and they supply the receiver).

Thanks for your help!

In all likelihood the HD receiver will work for OTA even without an subscription to Directv. You would just lose satellite channels. The HD receiver would simply receive the OTA signal from an antenna and send it to your TV without using Directv in the process. If you can, reply or private message me with the model number of your receiver and I can give you a definite answer then.

I really appreciate this. I haven't purchased it yet, but it looks like the Samsung SIR-TS360 is the one commonly available.

Thumbs up Samsung 360

I purchesed the Samsung TS360 at Circuit City on the 13th, and had it up and running with an OTA feed for local digital/HD channels. I did not get my dish installed for DirecTV unit the 19th. The Samsung does a great job with solo OTA and integrating all the channels in one guide.

2 thumbs up!!!
