Default Newbie Question

I am fairly new to this HD and still a little confused..

I have a CRT-HDTV with a built-in digital tuner with an indoor antenna. I'm amazed at how much better the picture is than regular TV. I have a regular directv reciever hooked up with the S-video and optical audio. My TV has a componet video input but no HDMI. I would like to upgrade to a HD-DVR but from what I've read componet is analog and HDMI is digital. If i upgrade would I see a big enough difference on the HD channels like ESPN and HBO than the regular channels to justify paying $600 for the upgrade?
Thank you in advance.

You can use the componant connection. They work fine with digital. Your PQ should be fine.

Also you probably will have to get a new 3 lnb dish to get ESPN HD and HBO HD and sign up the HD package.

Or you can get a 5 LNB dish, if you want it. If you are getting all your locals in good through the OTA, though, you may not want to pay the extra money, IF the 5 LNB costs more.

Depending on your TV, receiver, STB, etc., some displays may even look better with component. Don't put too much stock in the whole analog-digital argument. You will definitely see a much better picture, even without HDMI.

One added note, the HD-DVR currently out will not take advantage of any of the local channels offered by the 5 LNB dish. The new HD-DVR is due out mid-year. Again, this may not be a concern for you if you have a good OTA antenna.

Thanks for the input. I called Directv and they said that the local HD channels for my area will be available this spring. I am going to wait until then and get the 5 lnb dish so I won't have to upgrade twice. My
OTA is good but I have to keep adjusting it when I change channels.

If you can get locals OTA, you get better quality & it's free... the one time cost of an antenna is soon made up with sat fees. You just need a better antenna...
