Default ?? for Atlanta ppl who have upgraded to 5LNB/Locals HD

For those who have already gotten their equipment installed for HD MPEG4 and 5LNB?

1) How do you like the quality?

2) What company installed it? Directv has set my appt with Digital Satellite Services to install mine on 12/19...this is the 3rd scheduled appt...DSS say their other customers are more important than "upgrade" customers!! Today when they called to reschedule it was the actual tech who would be installing and he told me that he has never installed the 5LNB before! What gives? The service has been around since 11/22/05!!!

Last question:
3) Has anyone had their old equipment taken from them? All the equipment we have, we purchased ourselves from Best Buy in 2004 and we are planning on giving it to our son when he moves into his new house next year!
We live in the NW suburbs of Atlanta

Thanks for the info

1. Excellent quality on all MPEG4 LIL HD channels except WXIA-DT (11) very pixelized, also I have experienced audio drop outs during 5.1 DD through my receiver, but this seem to be a common problem many of us are waiting for a solution to. H20 has an excellent OTA tuner as well! Very Happy with the unit!

2. Ron's Tv out of Gwinnett. The installer is probably right regards to him never installing it by himself personally. My install was like a mini trainning, the manager came personally and set everything up while showing 2 other techs how to do it!

3. Nope! I was able to keep everything! Even the old 3LNB Dish!

I live in the Northern suburbs of ATL as well. My installation is supposed to be in the morning. Just called after reading your email and they say it is still on for the morning.

I'll try to answer your questions tomorrow (if it comes! )

I had my install last weekend and the PQ seems very good on the local channels. I'm not sure I've really tuned in to NBC so I can't comment on that.

Sorry, but I don't know the name of the company that did my install, but it was his third one and he had the entire process completed in about an hour. He did a very good job.

They did take my old receiver, but they told me that would be the case when I called to place the order.

I had mine installed a week ago today.

Quality on all channels is good. I can't compare the quality to what I had before because I just purchased the HDTV to go with the installation of the H-20.

I also don't remember the name of the installation company but I can tell you that they must have known what they were doing cause he had the old dish down and new dish up n runnin in 45 minutes.

As far as takin my old receiver...didn't happen. Dtv did tell me about a swap but I didn't give them anything from my stock of old receivers. I will prolly give these old receivers to my parents who need one.

I'm over in the Smyrna area.

I had mine done yesterday and it took the guy forever to get it done (~4 hours). I have issues getting all 5 of the satelites to connect (the setup utility says I should have all 5 and gives me an error), but of course this was not mentioned during the install (I noticed it myself later). I also noticed that my signal strength is in the high 70's to low 80's where as my previous receiver (SD-Tivo) was in the 90's...

The quality looks about as good as my OTA so I can't complain there, but the audio seems to have some glitches every once in a while...

The 5-LNB dish was mounted where my old one was, on the side of the house. It's a brick house so it should support the weight without a problem...

EDIT: I am in NW Atlanta (Vinings)...

You will not get all 5 satelites because the 5th is not operational yet. As for the signal strength, I noticed when I first had SD D* only that my signal strength was almost always 100%. When I switched to HD, however, my dish was no longer trying to look for one satelite in one orbit, but 3 satelites in three different orbits. So, now instead of pointing directly at one position, the dish was trying to get the best from each of the three. So, my signal strength went down a little, as a compromise to try to get the best of each. I would imagine when trying to find 5 satelites (or four operational satelites), you will see some loss in signal strength as the dish tries to hit the best of each one. Just think of trying to look at 5 spots in the sky all at once. You can't focus 100% on any one of them if you are going to see all 5. Just a thought. I may be wrong in that logic, correct me if I am.

My upgrade was installed on December 2nd, two weeks ago today.

1) I don't "like" the quality... I LOVE the quality! My OTA stations are popping up, solid and unwavering. And I finally get all the local digital stations available (even those I don't want like PAX and 57-1).

2) My system was installed by Digital Satellite (owned by Ron's TV, a nat'l company) Don't sweat the fact that the installer has no experience. The technology is new and "hot", meaning that Digital Satellite was so busy that they ran out of H20 receivers and mounting poles for awhile. So it's not surprising that there are few installers with actual experience. My guy made his first roof installation with me.

3) My installer did not take my old receiver, saying that D* would pick it up "later." My guess is that they want nothing to do with the disposal of these old units. In some states, it's against the law to put these units in landfills because they constitute hazardous waste.

I live in the eastern suburb of the A-T-L (Lithonia).

Summary... the biggest surprise was the added benefit of much better OTA reception.

I have to agree with this, the tuner in my 42" Hitachi Plasma would lock most stations at 90%, but some would waver in and out (40%-60%). With the new HD receiver I lock in every local Atlanta station at 100%. I am ~12 miles (as the crow flies) from Downtown Atlanta.

As mentioned, I got mine installed today. So far, the quality seems fine. I had the HR10-250 for 29 days, and I cannot see a noticable difference between it and the H20. However, I have not seen a local HDTV broadcast yet as the networks have not put on a show yet in HD.

I had an actual DirecTV guy out. He was pretty knowledgeable and did a good install. The only thing he did not know is that the 5th satellite was not active yet. I educated him after learning that here.

The only thing he took was the triple LNB, but that is because I asked him to. I have no use for it and no one I know needed it. Thought about Ebay, but did not want to deal with it now.

As I watch my H20 that was just installed today, I also notice that ota reception is better than with my LG. That is a good thing, since so few of the local HD channels are available with DTV.

I kept my LG hd receiver, and will mirror the hd service for 5 bucks because I bought the H20 (you know, the eventual $200.00 rebate with the 50 buck 5LNB dish).

My installation was a training experience for our installers, too. They thought that the dish was defective since it "only" picked up 4 satellites. And I had to fiddle with the receiver by myself to get the locals to come in at all.

Thanks for everyone responses...glad to know that you all have had good installs and everything is working great!!!

I, on the other hand, had hope to post today with news of my install....but that is not to be the case....Digital Satellite Services just called and rescheduled my appt for the 4th and as far as I am concerned, the LAST time.
If they don't show up on the 21st...I am switching to Comcast.
I have already lost hundreds of dollars in pay from missing work to wait for these yahooos NOT to show up and then to tell me that other customers are more important than "upgrade" customers.

They gave me the dreaded call today about recheduling; I was about to call Dave and raise hell when I got a call from the installer and he said he was on the way. There here now and its looking good so far.
