Default Get HD+receiver+DVR now or wait ? Confused..

Hi everyone, Im new to this forum but a long time (10+ yrs) DirecTV user. I'm about to make the jump to HD but confused about an equipment and timing issue and looking for some guidance. I live in Atlanta so the local HD channels coming on line is the tipping point for me and now I'm ready to order. I know that I will need to get the new dish and a new receiver to be able to receive the locals in HD from D*, and I know that that receiver must support MPEG-4. I also am a long time DVR user (Tivo) and simply can't live without my DVR so I need HD DVR functionality as well. I guess in a perfect world I would prefer Tivo for DVR functionality but could live with another brand DVR if that made things simpler for me in the long run. So that leads so my confusion and question.

I believe that if I called D* now, based on my needs they would have the new dish installed and also (given that I want HD DVR functionality) I would need to get the H20 receiver (I think that's the current model, right?) since that supports MPEG-4 (correct?). But does that unit also provide DVR functionality, and does it do so via Tivo? Or is it just a receiver without DVR functionality? And if I go down that path right now, will I need to change to a DirecTV-branded DVR very soon, as I understand D* is going to their own DVRs in 2006?

So what I'm struggling with is, would it be simpler (and less expensive) for me to wait a couple of months until D* comes out with it's own piece of equipment that provides the combined HD receiver+MPEG-4+DVR functionality I need ??? Of should I take the plunge now?

Thanks for any guidance.

Default For what it's worth...

I was in the same position, except that I can get my locals OTA. I would prefer to get them off the satellite.

I discussed it with the retention rep from DTV. She told me that the new DVR hasn't had an introduction date set yet, but when it does come out, it will probably be priced around $1000, to start, like the HD Tivo was. If I bought the HD Tivo now for $199 ($399 less the rebate), they would switch it out for free next year.

The worst-case scenario I've heard so far is that it's not free, but $99 for the switch. It's still cheaper than buying one new for $1000. There is no way to have the locals in HD from DTV, AND have a DVR right now. If you can get your locals OTA, I'd probably buy the TIVO and switch it out later.

Don't forget that even with the HD satellite, DTV is not carrying PBS, WB or UPN right now. Those you still need an antenna to get the HD signal.

I would wait until the new HD receivers come out with MPEG 4. This is the new compression protocol for HD and is what will be used with the new satellites.

Otherwise, make sure you make some agreement with Directv to upgrade your existing unit at little or no charge. Could save you a huge chunk of change. Give them a call and see what they say about this issue. I think we would all like to hear what they have to say officially.

Personally, I'd go with the current HR10-250. From what I understand the HD DVR replacing this unit will not be able to record OTA and will not be powered by Tivo. And the 'locals' include only ABC/NBC/CBS/FOX affiliates. Which means you will NOT be able to view or record PBS/UPN/WB in HD.

If by some means the new DVR tops the current one, they should switch it. Otherwise I'll be happy to get my locals OTA with this until as long as I can.

I just returned my H10-250 after having it for 29 days. The reason I returned it was that I could not get a firm commitment that it would be upgraded for little or no cost. I understand I might be out in the long run, but did not want to take a chance of getting burned for $400.

I reinstalled my old DVR and set up installation for the 5LNB and the H20. I was only charged $14.95 for this and they are coming Friday.

MWKBear said it best... do it! My wife and I did it 4 weeks ago in conjunction with buying our 2nd HDTV (an Aquos) and haven't looked back.

It's a heck of a deal for 1999 net price and you will always be able to use it in a room in future for SD and for OTA HD forever. And they will swap for free... they are doing it already in Detroit. They are NOT going to lose 10 yr customers like you and me by charging outrageous sums.

Good luck and enjoy!
