Default Is it possible to transfer recorded content from DirecTV onto a computer?

Hello. Thanks in advance for any help that you can provide.

Up to this point, I have used various cable providers in the past, and I have always had a Tivo brand DVR to record shows. Tivo allows you to transfer recorded content over to a computer so that you can archive things and then watch them in the future.

My understanding is that DirecTV does have a model of Tivo that works with it, however, this product does NOT allow you to transfer recorded shows to a computer.

Soooooo.........

Does anybody know if there is some other way to do this?

Is there a product that is capable of scheduling recordings and able to capture content directly onto a computer?

I am thinking of something along the line of HomeRun, although I do not think that particular product will work with any type of satellite system.

Thank you.

TC

You want a Hauppage capture card - You can transfer stuff from your direct dvr to your pc also this way but only by playing it back and recording the playback streaming real time to the hauppage pc card.

Hauppauge also has an external box that works, the HDPVR 2 a/k/a the 1512. It comes with a cable to connect from the DTV unit to the box (HDMI to component) and an HDMI cable to the computer. It takes patience to get it working, but I recommend the Hauppauge software download from their support site. I then use VideoReDo (the H.264 version) to edit the material and use the VideoReDo "quickstream fix" function to correct errors in the original download.

I have found that 80% of the downloads from DirecTV need quickstream fix, and that it doesn't always work - sometimes i have to download several different showings, all of which seem to include different errors.

If a 2 hour movies shows an incorrect running time it needs a quickstream fix; a box pops up showing the number of frames corrected - if the program corrects hundreds or thousands of frames the result will be unwatchable.

This isn't anywhere as easy as using Tivo Desktop with cable.
