Default Have any users hooked a Slingbox to Direct? Any Tips

Thinking of purchasing a Slingbox 500 to pair to a basement Direct TV receiver at my place, with the actual intent of allowing my 83 year old Mom the opportunity to see the one program she misses after "cutting the cord" on her own cable to save fixed income cash.

Have any of my fellow lodge brothers purchased a Slingbox and had difficulties, or successes? If so, I'd love to hear your experiences.

This is going to be my birthday present to my Momma, so hopefully you can understand the urgency of my getting it right!

Thanks in advance

I used the vulkano box, which is the same thing a sling. It worked great with Direct. My son used it to watch T.V. at college, and he loved it. The direct T.V. remote came up on screen, which was pretty cool. He was able to see and use the guide and DVR just like he had his own D* box. Very cool stuff.

Slingbox works fine as long as internet speed is 5Mbps or better. But wouldn't the Genie option be better and less money? Depending on what show she watches, Netflix or Amazon Plus might be other options to check out for streaming from the internet or downloading.

Netflix isn't an option, because she likes one particular recurring television program, involving a professional major league team, that, in her words, "has a very handsome head coach!"

I also use the Vulkano. Had it for 1 1/2 years and it works great. It's less expensive than Slingbox, and uses wifi. Only gitch is my microwave is on the same frequency. Operate the microwave and I lose the signal.

The Vulkano box uses only component or composite video. The Slingbox 500 will use HDMI and as far as I know will satisfy the HDCP requirements for HD programming. Not sure about the Directv boxes, but some boxes won't allow both HDMI and component at the same time and some boxes won't allow protected HD programming using component video.

An update, I hooked the sling box 500 to a HR 34 ( I think) Direct receiver in my basement , and it worked like a charm on all of my channels at her place 300 miles away. Not HD by any stretch of the imagination, but a decent enough looking "stream". Then we took the signal from an old desktop computer (had to get an upgrade to windows 7 on that) and using a HDMI cable that I borrowed from my brother, ran to her television. Yippee! It worked!

I have my DirecTV H25 connected to the TV with HDMI and to the Slingbox 350 with component cables. Works perfectly.
