Default SWM5 VS Old 18 inch dish

I picked up an SWM 5 and slimline dish. I have been a direct tv subscriber since it was a DYI kit that I purchased from Circuit City. Years ago when you purchased the "kit", it came with a receiver, dish, mount, lnb etc, so when I wanted a second receiver I got the dish too. I hooked up both receivers in the house to one dish leaving me with an extra dish. Some years later I installed the extra dish on my shop and moved one receiver there. This is where my question comes in. If I replace the dish at the house with the SWM 5 and replace the receiver with an HD receiver and upgrade with DTV, will the change have an effect on the old receiver at my shop? Any help would be appreciated. I am trying to get up to speed on the newer equipment. I am a DIY type person so I want to do it myself. Also, what is the advantage of buying a receiver rather than letting DTV bring one out?

It should not affect the other receiver, The only problem is with your account the only receiver that will work on the Swm System is a D!2 so they may want you to upgrade the current SD receiver to a D12.A D12 will work Swm or Non Swm system

Talking over the phone to D* it might be had for them to understand you have a second building with a separate Dish -The installer will get it right when he shows up.

D* see's on Account with One address so your System is One type., Your 18" dish and Current Receiver will work no matter what you do to your house as long as D* doesn't deactivate it from your account.

That is what I was hoping. I figured as long as the receiver remained authorized it should not be a problem. I see all these ads for receivers from internet suppliers like Solid Sig. If I buy a receiver from them will DTV still charge me a monthly receiver fee? I have had to argue with them a couple times over the years because they have tried to charge me a "rental fee" on the receivers I bought originally. I would rather do everything myself rather than getting an installer involved. If I could get a new receiver and have everything hooked up and just call them for authorization I would rather do that. Thanks for your reply.

ALL "NEW" Receivers are Leased -On your Account the First Receiver is is Included in your monthly -every Receiver you add to your account adds $6 a month to your bill (No matter if it's owned or leased)-

You can still find owned Receivers (CAUTION)- CK the Receiver ID with D* before purchase to make sure it is owned and can be activated . The Owned receiver added to your account will not Extend or cause additional 2 yr commitment. It will still cost you $6 a Month if it's an additional receiver.

Adding a Leased Receiver will add 2 yr commit + still Cost $6 a Month. None of which matters if you are not planning on leaving D*.

The $6 Fee is something you call all anything you like - Rental Fee, Mirror program fee -Whatever if you want to watch a different D* TV channel on your additional TV it's a charge that will apply.
