Question hdtv on standard signal

I am shopping for HDTV set, and frankly I am stuck. There is so much useless information around, and I need the help of a knowledgeable individual.

Situation: I have small children that tend to get too close to the TV (not all the time, but enough). Question? How will the definition be on a LCD or DLP TV with a digital input signal not HD. e.g. PBS Kids through a DirecTV system to a LCD or DLP TV(Samsung HLP 5085W), Will there be a lot of pixelation? Would a HDTV CRT be better choice(Sony kd-34xbr960)?

I have gone to a couple stores to see DLP and LCD rear projectors and I find the image to be somewhat poor with a non HD signal. Salespeople tell me it is the signal, that it has been divided too many times! How can this be, it is digital? Either you get it or you do not? I would like the bigger DLP or LCD but Is CRT the best choice, or not?

If you are very close to the screen, the direct view 34" would be better in my opinion. RP HDTVs will tend to look bad on SD progrmming like the PBS Kids channel you mentioned. If you have a HD Directv receiver, it will convert the SD digital signal received from the satellite to a HD output and generally the picture will be better than if you have a SD Directv receiver. I have a 40" and a 50" RPTV and the SD picture on the 40" is better than the 50".
