Default serious problem with my xbr960

Hi,

I just ran into a problem with my tv this evening. Suddenly, it went completely white. Ocassionally, fine blue lines run across the screen vertically with the white background but that is it. It is NOT the cable connection. Not one button works on the remote, ie if i press menu, no menu comes up or if i try to switch video inputs nothing happens. I tried to reset the tv but no luck. I was wondering if any of you had this type of problem or no what it could be?

It was a floor display model so i dont know if this has anything to do with it but i did buy the service plan from Circuit City. I called them and a tech is supposed to call me back in 2 days to set up an appointment.

Any other advice. I've had the TV for a year and it has an awesome picture for those who are looking. My sonys in the past have been very reliable.

I think some of the Sony's need to be unplugged for a while in order to completely reset them. Unplug it, goto work or school or whatever, plug it in when you get home.... try that. I'd still make the appointment with CC though. Milk em' for what their worth, that TV is exspensive, and should be quite the performer.

thanks, i tried what you suggested...no love. the screen is just a light blue color now. I wonder what it is? Anyways, the repair service called me this morning to get a description of the problem. I guess the tech will research the problem based on my description order parts and call me on thursday/friday to setup an appointment. I was surprised they didnt actually need to look at it first. We'll see what happens...

I guess by the lack of responses no one has had a similar problem. I had to call the technicians Friday to see what was up. Now they are saying they have to come out and look at it to determine the problem...imagine that? Ofcourse, they won't be "in the area" until next thursday. It is going to take at least a month for this thing to get fixed. What a pain in the azzz!! I'm glad it isnt football season.

I hope your prediction of a month turns out to be true because preseason will be well under way.

Try using a different i/p jack and see if it simply isn't seeing any video i/p.

Update:

Tech came out yesterday to look at TV. I think he said it had bad RAM and since it is soldered to the mother board he would have to replace the whole motherboard. I guess since the TV uses digital circuitry the RAM is what holds the info for the picture. Therefore, if the RAM is bad then you get a blank picture. Wonder if this is a common problem?

He is also checking on the price to replace the plastic cover that flips up and down and hides the buttons on the TV. The left and center track knobs broke off. It still goes up and down although lopsided. When down you cant tell bc the one side seems strong enough to hold it in place. He has to call sony to see if there is a kit to fix it. IF not it would require him to replace the whole casing. IF that is the case, probably not worth the money. NOT covered by warranty bc it is a cosmetic defect.

sorry to hear about your problem. trust me, i can feel your pain. the length of time it takes will vary depending on how fast/competent the service company they contract with is.

Besides the weight, I've loved the tv thus far. I've been studying for the bar so it probably has been a blessing that this has happened. And like i said, i probably would have been more ticked off if it had been basketball or football season. We'll see how the repair goes.

good luck with it. remember, that with technology comes a price. high end things arent always the most reliable but that is the price you pay. ever owned a bmw or mercedes? same problem, but just like the hdtv, when it is working it is awesome.

Default UPDATe

well here is the update. it has been about a month now and the tv is still not working.

the repairman came out today to replace the motherboards. he did so and the tv still doesnt work. he is confused by this and doesnt seem sure as to what the problem is. now he thinks it may be the cable card. this is bull crap and my patience is now fading.

any suggestions. should i call circuit city's 800 number or call the store i bought it from directly?

rxtasy, im pretty much in the same situation your in! if you read my other post ud know my deal. Well today just like yourself a tech came back to finish fixing the tv. Tv worked for ten minutes with the new part in it then it shut it off completly Hence SAME DEAL! I called my three friends up we hauled this garbage down the stairs and brought it right back to circuit city! I was about to start screaming and yelling at these people, but to my amazment they said no problem took the tv right back without the box and im gona get another tv delivered monday! So what im saying is bring the tv right back and either A:get your money back or B exchange it for another one. The process takes about 5 Minutes! Good luck! cause we all need it with this tv lol

If you decide to get the same model again i suggest havin them deliver it. Unless its not a burden hauling this puppy in your house. Like i said i hada get 2 other guys to help me with this tv. If it wasent so big and heavy i wouldent care but this thing is a project when it needs to be moved and i cant believe iv done it twice!

Mineo, thanks for the response. I called the store and I called Sony directly. The guy at the store was pleasant and is going to call the regional service manager to get back with me on Monday. Sony was absolutely no help.

I would bring it right back as you did but I bought it 11 months ago. According to the receipt one has 30 days for returns and exchanges.

I thought that you said you bought the warranty. Doesn't it say that if the techs cant fix it you get the same model free or if they dont have it the newest model. I know that's the deal with my 5 year warranty. I'm hoping my tv breaks in a couple of years so I can get a new version.

Well, the repair man came by again yesterday. Sony told him to replace the main motherboard. He did and it still doesnt work. 5 weeks now of this crap. You know, last time he was here he thought it was the cablecard but he didnt bring a cablecard. WTF? Anyways, i've had enough and CC is letting me replace the television.

I'm moving across the country in a couple of months so now i'm torn about what kind of tv to get(will be living in a very small condo for a year or so). Nothing really compares to the xbr picture. I wish it wasnt so heavy and bulky.

Thinking of getting a lcd flad panel to get me by for awhile. I like the the phillips 37 incher or maybe the 32 inch sharp(pretty much an even swap in price)

Anyone have any thoughts?
