Default PC vs. Upconversion DVD Player

Just wondering what anybody knows about upconverting DVD files on a PC. I understand that if I use software such as ffdshow that the resolution on my PC may be comparable to an upconversion DVD player. However, when I compare the two it seems that the DVD player does a slightly better job. Does anybody have any experience with ffdshow or similar? Oh yeah, I have an HP DEC with an Nvidia 6600 and a DVI output.

Hi,
this is quite hard to answer and very subjective. Some people get great results with upconverting via htpc, some say they don´t, others despair of the kinks that can come with an HTPC.

Personally, i have never achieved a better pq via my HTPC than with my standalone players, but i haven´t tried very hard. My focus for the HTPC has been on HD playback and not SD. I used to have a non-upconverting Marantz SAL and now have a Toshiba E1 (HD-A2 in the US). The upconverted sd dvds look just great, even though it is the 'budget' model.

So if you´re prepared to invest quite some time in this, you can try to beat your upconverting player. You´ll have to decide, if it´s worth your time.

Cheers
Robert

I found that the video hardware in your HTPC plays a big part. I've always gotten better results with ATI cards over nVidia cards. Unfortunately, ATI's driver support isn't as good as nVidia, so you pretty much have to pay your money and take your chances. I'm using an ATI card right now and I'm very happy with it.

I have never seen a video card output that was better than the MDP-130 tuner card's output. It upconverts DVDs and will record ATSC/QAM as well.

Ah yes, the MyHD. I had one of those once. Right now I'm using the Dvico Fusion HDTV 5. Unfortunately, I'm only using it as an S-video input. I can't get good reception of over-the-air HD channels around here without running up a big aerial, so I don't really bother with that. The Fusion HDTV 5 also supports QAM, but all the digital channels on my cable system are encrypted, so no dice. (grrrrrrrr...) Since this card doesn't have an HD component in, if I want to watch a channel in HD I have to switch the TV over to the direct connection from the cable box, and bypass my PC altogether. So basically, I have this great HDTV tuner card that is totally useless, thanks to Hollywood.

The ATI does a really superior job upconverting and displaying HD. I would be interested in seeing how it stacked up against the MDP-130.
