Default Connecting a laptop to a Home Theater system

First a little background to help you understand my problem. I am making a room in my house into a little home sports bar. I have a laptop running a jukebox program that I would like to connect to an old RCA home theater receiver for a sound sytsem to use for music. Currently, I have it connected using the headphone jack with a Y adapter that connects to an RCA input on the receiver just like any other component would.

My problem is that using this setup, the sound is not so great. Just doesn't have much depth to it. I've plugged the DirecTV reciever into the home theater receiver and tuned to one of the XM radio channels and it sounds really good, so it's not the receiver, it has to be the laptop just having crummy output throught the headphone jack.

Does any one know if this would have better sound if I got a dedicted PCMCIA sound card or have any other ideas on how I can make this sound better. I don't mind spending the money to get one if it will help but hate to waste the money if it just ends up with the same sound.

Thanks

I would say yes. Using the headphone jack out from the laptop to an adapter in to your receiver is not going to produce very good sound. Get a good USB or PCMIA external card like you said and hook that puppy up. It will sound much better. If your receiver has digital inputs (optical/coax), they make card with them as well..

Hadn't thought of going the USB route. Thanks for the links, I'll look into these.
