PC to HDTV issues ...
I have a Sony HDTV model KF-60XBR800 and a Sony VAIO PC with an ATI X600XT card.

I would like to connect PC to HDTV and have a relatively decent display of desktop for browsing web, etc ...

Using DVI to DVI I get an extremely crisp display with alot of overscan. Actually, I need to force 720 mode within ATI utility everytime the PC boots in order to get that resolution. Unfortunately, at that res I have alot of overscan and seem to be unable to deal with it. I have tried using PowerStrip but it doesn't seem to cooperate. I always seem to get some mode that "scrambles" screen and pressing ESC seems unable to return to prior setting.

S-video has been the most cooperative, but lousy text is the result. I've been able to compensate for that a bit by using large icons and extra large text.

I obviously would prefer to use DVI since that has given me excellent quality all the way around with the exception of overscan.

two questions:

How can I get the PC to come up with the 1280 x 720 mode everytime it boots?

What is best way to at least minimize the overscan?

Any help would be appreciated.

You should read the thread: Overscan

Overscan is a function of your TV not the computer. If you can get into the TV's service menus, you can sometimes reset the height and width to get rid of the overscan. All TVs are sent from the factory with the height and width set to overscan so you don't see the edge of the picture where there is usually video noise at the top and bottom. There is the possibility on some video cards to set up a "resolution within a resolution" but I don't think it is possible with your card. The result of this would be a reduced desktop resolution of something like 1100x700 for a 1280x720p resolution. I've read of this, but have never seen it.

All in all, HDTVs do not make good computer monitors. I use mine to watch video clips, slide shows, digital photo and as a video jukebox where I can size the window to match the screen. Being an old assembly language programmer, I learned to run the PC with the keyboard, so I dont need the whole desktop to show anyway. I located my desktop icons to have the ones I need when using the TV to be in the center of the screen.

Another suggestion for controlling the PC in your easy chair to allow you to sit across the room would be to use a laptop computer and PCAnywhere. Set your HTPC to be a host and then you can remote control it from your laptop. You need a fast wireless or hardwired network connection, but it works pretty well. Sometimes I use this for surfing where a group of people need to see the screen.

On the resolution of 1280x720 on boot up, I have an ATI 7500 pci video card with the latest Catylist drivers. I have powerstrip to be installed on bootup. My PC will boot to whatever resolution I select using the desktop properties. So if I set the resolution to 1280x720 before shutdown, it will boot up set to 1280x720. If you don't have the HDTV resolutions available in your desktop properties box, you may need to load the Catylist drivers if they will work with your card. I'm not knowledgeable of your particular video card. Also you might look into the use of the Omega Radeon drivers (you can Google to find them) if your card is a Radeon.

Thanks for the swift reply ... and, yours *was* the one I was awaiting.

I haven't had a chance to try this yet, but I finally found the service menu items I was looking for. Earlier info I found simply used HSIZ & VSIZ for horizontal & vertical sizing which is one of the things I felt all along was part of the solution. On newer model Sony's the method of getting into service is the same (i.e., display, 5, vol. +, power) but they use different "variable" names. Even better, the info implies that I can adjust HSIZ & VSIZ for a specific channel, mine being the DVI input (DTV on television).

Here is the info I found with the new value labels:

Well, I decided to start poking around in the service menu and do some experimenting. I discovered that there was more than one location to change the various geometry settings. For example, horizontal position could be adjusted in the following places: MID1:0(DHPH), MID1:9 (MDHP), and MID4:0(DHPL). The first location affected all inputs, the second location affected both my DVI input and my component input, and the third location only affected my DVI input. Bingo. A little more experimentation and I determined that the following settings can be used to adjust the screen geometry on your DVI input without affecting any of the other inputs:

MID4:0(DHPL) - horizontal position
MID4:1(DHSL) - horizontal size
MID4:2(DVPL) - vertical position
MID4:3(DVSL) - vertical size

Armed with this information I chose the default Powerstrip setting for 1280x720p (HDTV). Then I adjusted the above settings until the picture fit perfectly on the screen with no overscan or underscan in any direction.

Now, I'm not sure if the MID4 category will be the one that equates to my DVI input, but this is definitely the answer I've been seeking.

Now, if I can get it to boot up with the specified resolution I'll be extremely happy.

I hope this helps someone else, I've invested alot of time (hours+) into this one.

Sony KDF60XS955 has good adjustments too
The picture can be shifted left & right, up & down, overscan + & -, and three different stretch/zoom modes.

I'm still trying to find a DVI-I dual channel to HDMI cable about 25' long. One supplier said anything over 5 meters might loose signal. Anyone know if that's true.

The same cable in optical supposedly can go much further but = BIG $

I really do not want to relocate my computer setup closer to the TV.

I was told by Sony that the sets resolution is 1386 X 788. Does that sound right to anyone?

Looking in the manual, the "power requirements" are 120V, 60Hz. Does that mean the refresh rate is 60Hz?

Upgrade your ATI Catalyst Driver
Try upgrading to a newer Catalyst version.

They have options to create a custom display size would be suitable for any display.

G-Force FX 5200 to LG-HDTV, I am desperate!
Dear guys,
This is my first time here, so, hi to everyone. I am from Brazil, carnaval, Rio de Janeiro, I bet some of you might know the place, right? Anyways, I really have an issue here. I recently bought a LG-LAFINION '72-HDTV, and it bares two inputs, which are : 480iX1080i & 480pX1080i. Problem is, I have a 2.8 processor, 512 RAM, and the above mentioned graphic card (G-Force FX 5200). So, of course, I got very excited about connecting the both, using the DVI output on the back of the G-Force card. So, I bought the ''ATi DVI-I to Component HDTV Adapter'', to hook up my PC to the HDTV (Here is the link, in case you don't know this adapter : ( http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProdu...-999-203&depa=1 ). I connect the ATI DVI adapter to the DVI output found on the G-force FX 5200 card, and then, connect the three composite cables (Red, blue and green), found on the other and of the ATI adapter to the TV input. After hooking everything up, and turning on the TV, I saw all my dreams falling apart, you see, I have been dreaming with it for years, worked like a dog to purchase the systems, and now, the image, is totally blurred, and the horizontal is all mixed up, along with the vertical lines, in a nutshell, my HDTV, turns into a mess, everytime I hook it up with the computer! Now, the definite question ; What should I do? Do I have to download any new driver, do I have to buy something else? Or, isn't there any compatibility between the PC & HDTV, using the G-force 5200 card? Do I have to buy an ATI to make it work? Please, say it isn't true . Please guys, what can you do to help this desperate Brazilian? I have a HDTV, and never watches it, due to this problem. How can I make the image get through? Crisp and clear? By the way, I use the driver that comes in the bundle of the G-Force (On the CD).

You are desparate & confused! Welcome Alessandro...

First, you can't use the ATI adapter with the NVidia card. ATI only works with ATI.

Second, your TV must be a 1080i native set (CRT RPTV?)... not the best for PC use, but workable. You can use custom display mode of 960 x 540 or probably 848 x 480 EDTV mode from the drivers. NVidia cards can NOT produce any interlaced modes like 1920 x 1080i. Perhaps you should buy an ATI card that matches your DVI to Component converter...

The correct res on the Sony LCD panels is 1366 x 768. Their website is full of bad typos...

I've found progressive scan displays make fine desktops, I've been using my 50" 720p display exclusively for a year and a half. 1080p displays will be even better. Only hassle is getting the overscan worked out, and makers are making that easier for us in both graphics cards & HDTVs.

I have an Nvidia card(6600GT) and can produce 1920x1080. My crt hdtv is also capable of 480i,480p and 1080i. I wish 720p was also supported. I've gotten this modes to work both in Windows XP and linux. I needed to hack the modeline though for Linux. I think, FX5200 does support this kind of modeline too because max of FX5200 is 2035x2035. Here are the modelines that I have tested and worked.

The first one is the one I've always used.

But going back at Allesandro's post about 480iX1080i & 480pX1080i, this is TOTALLY wrong. Allesandro, you are very confused. DO NOT RUSH!!! :D There is no such thing as that kind of mode. You have to read your hdtv's manual. Prolly, you meant 480i, 480p and 1080i which are the very common modes on hdtv.

But, unfortunately, what RSadwey was telling is correct. The adapter is the culprit. It's wrong. What you might want to do is

Question for you Allesandro, what ports can you see on your FX5200 card? I looked at Newegg and some have DVI ports.

I should have said 'older NVidia cards' can't do interlace... you've got one of the new hotties Virtuosity... Do you have the model with Component out standard from eVGA?

Interlaced modes are really bad for a desktop, they're really bad at showing moving text. That's why interlaced PC monitors died out 20 years ago. You should look into the progressive scanned modes your TV can produce like wide EDTV (848 x 480p30). That mode will also work well with his current older NVidia card.

Yeah, 1920x1080i is really bad when I use my hdtv as computer screen. I couldn't read the text because they're very small and flickering. However, it's totally awesome when watching 1080i programs. My card is actually a Leadtek card and does have the 6 pin p/s2 proprietary port. It also came with an adapter to YPbPr cable. However, using that cable, tearing still happens just like in DVI. Not annoying though. This is the reason I want to buy the VGA to RGBHV cable, hoping that I might be able to get rid of tearing.

I will try progressive next time.

My set up and why it works
I have my GeForce 6800 GT hooked up to my Samsung HLP5674W. The high end Nvidia cards all support HDTV directly over DVI or at least the proper resolution over VGA (which is what I currently use). Set up was as simple as setting my desktop to the 720p standard resolution and connecting th PC to the TV. Initially the imagine was underscanned slightly on the TV but after the autocorrect routine on the TV my desktop perfectly fit the screen. All in all, super easy, and amazing to the eye. I highly recommend NVidia cards and Samsung TVs although most of the inputs are dissapearing off the new generation of Samsung TVs. :(

Resolution problems at bootup with plasma off
I am new to this forum, but hopefully someone can help me.

I have a NEC Plasma 50" 50XR4 (Their newest model with DVI and 1080i)
I have connected my PC to the screen. The PC carries an nVidia MX4000 with both VGA and DVI outputs. I connected a 15"TFT to the VGA output and have set the videocard to Dual View so I can run two different resoltions on both screens. The 15" TFT runs on 1024x768 (4:3) and the NEC runs on 1360x768 (true 16:9).
If I reboot the PC with the plasma on, everything is fine and the resolution comes up in 1360x768, but if I reboot the PC with the plasma off, the PC starts in 1280x720 and as long as the plasma stays off, there is no way to change this resolution into 1360x768. I can change the resolution back to 1360x768 after I have turned the plasma on.
This tells me a couple of things: nVidia is capable of displaying 1360x768 and there is some autodetect thing going on on the DVI port. When the plasma is off, not all resolutions are detected.

How can I force my PC to come up in 1360x768 on my second screen (the plasma)?
I tried forcing it using powerstrip, but I got the same results.
This situation is very annoying and there must be a way to get this right. I will even buy a new videocard if someone can tell me that that is a good solution. I am running XP SP2 and I got the latest GForce nVidia drivers installed.

HDMI & DVI are 'intelligent' connections that negotiate their operating res with the display... but can't with the Plasma off. This won't happen if you swap the connections, using VGA or Component to the Plasma.

Plasma DVI resolution problem
I know I will not have this problem while using VGA, but since I use Dual View I have my VGA already in use for an LCD Beamer at 1024x768 (4:3 only) and the beamer does not carry a DVI port. So I am forced to use the DVI on the plasma to be able to run another resolution on that screen.
I saw in powerstrip that the plasma has 3 resolution timings available when in stby (something low, 1280 x 720 and 1920 x 1080). When the plasma is switched on, I get many more available resolution to choose from.
I was able to create a custom resolution in my nVidia drivers yesterday so now the PC reboots in 1360x768. Unfortunately when I turn on the plasma after the reboot is finished, the plasma comes up in 1920x1080, because that is probably the one closest to what was possible when the plasma was still in stby. To fix this back to 1360x768, I have to change the resolution once in my display settings, and back again to 1360x768. This is really anoying, but only happens after a reboot with the plasma in stby.
Isn't it possible to add the 1360x768 resolution to the list of possibilities when the plasma is in stby? Or is it possible to get rid of the autodetect function that DVI has (maybe cut a line in the cable or so)?
Another question that will pop up soon is what will happen when I connect my PC's DVI out to the new Onkyo NR5000E with a HDMI port. The plasma will then be connected to the Onkyo on the HDMI out. I wonder what resolutions will be available with the Onkyo in stby and/or in on and what will the plasma do depending on the input source the onkyo has selected. The Onkyo is capable of putting all analogue signals out on the HDMI port, so even my CVBS VCR signal will be outputted through the HDMI port. What will the plasma do?
I take it, not many people can answer these questions and hopefully I will be able to that soon, but it is a big risk to buy expensive equipment not really knowing how all the components will react. Maybe my resolution problem will be resolved after installing the Onkyo in between the (PC) DVI -> HDMI (Onkyo) HDMI -> DVI (Plasma) lines.
