Default Is it possible to use a pc in place of a receiver?

title says it all. is it possible? playing dvd's/tv right into 5.1, 6.1 etc. or do you have to have some kind of audio receiver? thanks

Yes it is. If you want any high quality sound you will probably want a high quality multichannel amplifier like this Sherwood Newcastle 7 channel amp:

You will also need some great speakers.
