Default HDMI sound on computer question?

I am not sure how to put this in words (or if i'm even sure why in general)

but my question is why do video cards that have HDMI out only can do video? Is there a way you can hook sound up to it to make it output sound? Yes I know video cards only output video...are there special video/sound cards you can buy for HDMI video/audio out?

another reason I ask is because I recently saw a laptop that does hdmi video and audio out, how is that pulling it off?

Actually, video cards with HDMI slots generally do audio output as well. I used to have a HD5770 (which I am willing to sell btw, wink wink) and never had a monitor for it. I connected it to my HDTV and it had sound. I now have a HD7870 and have a nice monitor for it, but occasionally connect my HDTV to it when wanting to watch movies from my PC. It also does audio out.

In your sound control panel (usually the speaker icon in the bottom right hand corner of a Windows machine). You can right click on the speaker icon and select 'playback devices' and select 'digital audio (HDMI)'. Most monitors do not have speakers though, so if yours does not, well, that is why you cant get audio.

Ha!

Thats actually the one i'm using, guess I just assumed video card=video out only.

so do they get the sound from the onboard sound then? Or is the sound built into the video card?

Built into the video card - with the first few iterations of HDMI cards you had to connect a header from the card to the HD sound output on the MB but these days it is all integrated into the cards.

Since you have an ATI card you need to install the HDMI drivers which are usually included in the catalyst package for install, but if you only installed the video drivers you will need to get the HDMI drivers for that catalyst version.

Default HDMI with audiom on a video card

I think "generally" is a bit of an overstatement. Some cards do audio, some require a jumper connector, and some have it built in. From what I've heart, MOST higher end ATI video cards have it built in (directly, no extra wires), but most others do not (and require the jumper arrangement), and some few don't support it at all.

Basically, the computer HDMI standard does video, and audio is optional, so, in order for a video card to do audio, it also has to "be a sound card" - and then it has to combine the signals to the output - which is not something that they all do.
