Default Dual monitor (clone) 1 hdtv, 1 lcd monitor resolution problems

I have a quad core, 4 gb ram, xp sp3 pc, with a Radeon 4650 video card. I am trying to run clone mode, and clone my desktop to the tv 1080p(samsung hls5087w), via a DVI to HDMI cable. I can get it to clone and display properly, but whenever I launch a game, or the full screen tests of DXDIAG, my resolution resets to 848x480. Games will not even allow me to adjust the resolution to full screen. If I disable the HDTV, everything works fine. I have fiddled with the settings, but maybe I am doing something wrong. My monitors resolution is 1440x900.

The only thing I can think of is in CCC under Video - Presets. There is a checkbox that lets applications set the display properties. If you haven't done so, try unchecking it and see if that helps.

It may be that since your monitor has a different resolution than your HDTV the game rendering will not handle the double scaling. Will your monitor handle the same resolution as your HDTV?
