Do you use an HDTV as your monitor, how big is it, and how far away do you sit?

Default Do you use an HDTV as your monitor, how big is it, and how far away do you sit?

hey guys, i'm about to get an HDTV for a monitor, but i don't want to screw this up so i thought i'd draw on your collective knowledge.

i want the TV to look reasonably large from 10 feet away (not theater-like--I'm thinking about 40"), but I'll use it as a monitor from at most 3 feet away. This might not even be possible.

i do a lot of web surfing and word processing on my current 23" monitor, and I play first-person shooters. I'm worried about fuzzy text, eyestrain, and ghosting. I've looked at TVs in the store, but the conditions there are different from the ones i'll be using it under.

Has anyone had success with this situation or a similar one? I'm really curious to hear about any personal computing setup with a TV as the monitor.

Thanks in advance guys.

in return for the advice, here is a youtube video of two baby elephants in a wading pool: watch?v=Od7U9GhZg_g

I have used my 40" toshiba as a second screen on my laptop. But only from 8' away. I would expect 3' away would be like sitting in the first row of a theater. Constantly turning your head to try not to miss anything.

yeah, this is one of my worries. also, from 8' away any fuzziness in text is probably not noticeable. have you played any pc games this way?

okay we have one person at 40" and 8 feet. any other data points for me?

I use a Westinghouse LVM42 42" monitor and there is no fuzzy text at all, even at 3 feet. The key is to get a monitor that allows you to turn overscan off to get rid of the fuzzy text.

Well that's great to know. Do you do very much web browsing/word processing/reading on it at 3 feet away, or are you usually further back?

Yes I regularly use the monitor at 3 feet. The monitor has several resolutions that I can send it since it is a monitor and not just a HDTV. Up close I use 1920x1080 resolution and at 3 feet I will adjust the browser window to a width of about 1024 pixels wide. At 8 to 10 feet I will switch to 1280x720 resolution to make everything larger.
