Default NOOB Wants to get PC on my HDTV

Hey guys...

Be easy on me I am a noobie

I am in the midst of cutting grip of death that COMCAST has on my cable life right now and I am in the process of getting setup with some OTA channels.

I am trying to supplement my xbox 360 (hulu and netflix) by adding the ability to have my laptop display on my tv, for other sorts of streaming tv sites.

I currently have a samsung HLS5086W HDTV and I have a msi branded laptop....I can get details tomorrow (currently out of town at inlaws).

My father in law has an imation link wireless converter that plugs in to his usb port on the laptop and displays on his tv. I was wondering if that's the way I need to go or if you had any other suggestions....I would like the best picture possible for streaming video and watching movies....and would prefer a wireless connection.

Thanks in advance

it will all depend on what video outputs your notebook supports and what various video inputs your TV will support. The most typical notebook outputs are analog VGA and digital DVI or HDMI. The other step along the way is to see if your video card in the notebook computer supports the native resolution of the HDTV set.

get an HDMI cable and just hook the laptop to the HDTV - see what happens.

The computer operating system should detect the new "monitor"

They have kits for that, check Newegg. But from the reviews they are at best touch and go.

+1 "just get a longer cable" .... I use a 25' HDMI cable from Monoprice - works great, no interference from other wireless devices, no dropouts, just works !

not everything in the a/v world is ready for wireless

Or get a wireless keyboard/mouse setup like one of these:

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_8_32?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=wireless+keyboard+with+trackball&sprefix= wireless+keyboard+with+trackball&x=0&y=0

That way you can set your laptop near the TV and run it from the couch.
