Eating always won out. When one of us hit a "no gas" week, we would hitch rides with friends, walk or just stay home. It wasn't a big deal back then, although I suspect that same group of guys (myself included) is now so spoiled we would consider this an extreme hardship.

Another memory from the past - we had one car, as did most families. My dad carpooled every other day with his boss, so every other day my mom was "stranded" without a vehicle. When she had the car, we rode to school, along with several other kids she would pick up. On days that mom didn't have the car, we rode with the parents of those other kids.

This was all considered "normal". What I am trying to say is that not so long ago people got by driving a lot less. Now I drive to work by myself, see people at church who live in my neighborhood and don't think twice about any of this.

Families went to owning multiple cars when mom quit working at home and started working at a business. That was a lifestyle change that impacted America in a tremendous way (increased wealth by the average family, kids raised by strangers and an increased divorce rate). As fuel costs (including heating & cooling at home) increase, there will be lifestyle changes. While I don't want to go back to those day, I didn't live in a house with air-conditioning till I was in college (and in an apartment over the garage).

We will adapt, and it will be interesting to see the impact on our society.
I agree, we have no choice.

When i went to college I met my future wife there and she
shared a bowl of soup with me... we were both living on the
edges to make through college... not much money to go around.
But, we survived and then got married.
Not everyone is born with a Silver Spoon in their mouth...

It may take awhile for this country to get the gears burning...
but once it happens... the oil pushers will be shittin bricks...

Right now this country is just startin to get up to speed...
just like the old steam engines... they came... they went...

So much for predictions. On Dec 30, 2008, Bloomberg reports $37.25/bbl.

I hate to see any of grandpa scooter threads re-opened.

I wonder if that ol' f*cker got run over yet while riding his wonderful 100MPG death scooter?

I just replaced my wife's minivan with an SUV after someone rear ended her with a truck and totaled the van. The SUV is only a 6 cylinder so the MPG difference is about 2 MPG, but she will be safer and so won't the kids.

Until the bigger SUVs or the truck that hit her are off the road I want her in something that at least has bumpers equal in height to what they are for her SUV so the bumpers actually help. It is amazing that they make these safer bumpers but do not require all bumpers to be the same height so they actually do some good.

If we have to drive a little less because of the slightly lower efficiency of the SUV so be it.

Well, the year is quite young. Too bad it took the worse economy since the great depression and an overall shitty world economy for it to go below $40 (amongst other things).. I think many people were happier when they had jobs and could pay $120 a barrel.. But fuck OPEC anyway..

Congrats on your new SUV! I hope you will post pictures of it and don't spare the dirty nudie shots of the engine. I was hoping you would at least go with a big V8, but then most people arn't absolute performance/horsepower junkies like I am. I am not sure you could actually make vehicles with bumpers that are all at the same height, as there are some very different structural issues that would have to be solved, assuming that it is possible. People love to spit on SUV's, but most people fail to realize that SUV's DO NOT get noticeably worse fuel economy than comparable large vehicles like minivans do. In many cases, it is almost dead equal.

Did you decide on 4wd?
