1957 Mercury Turnpike Cruiser

http://www.conceptcarz.com/vehicle/z...e-Cruiser.aspx

My grandparents (mothers side) had one of these. I remember that cool rear window that went up and down. Their's was black in color with a gray/silver interior.

A great story about that car . . .

Every summer, I went to see my grandparents for a couple of weeks. They lived in Loch Sheldrake, NY - not too far from Liberty, NY - the Catskills (mountains). It was their summer place, a bungalow . . . so they could get away from the opprerssive heat in No. Miami, FL where they had a condo (used to visit them there too - during Xmas school break)

There were a bunch of homes in this association, so during the summer months, there were a lot of kids visiting their grandparents. Enough to form a full nine player baseball team. We would play other associations in the area - that meant walkable (LOL) of which there were 2 or 3. Of course not everyone was staying for the same length of time visiting, so we always had new blood. We range in age from 10.5 to 12.5.

Anyways, the team is over at my place . . . EVERYONE loved my grandmothers home baked cookies, and one of the guys starts talking about this association ball team that is supposed to be really good, but they won't travel to our field. All we need is a ride. . .

And my grandmother just voluenteers to drive. All nine of us! 3 in the front seat and 6 in the back seat (yes, the interior was THAT big). We meet at my place about 9 AM and off we go. We get about 2 miles from my place - another 10 to go and all of a sudden, one of the kids in the back seat tells everyone . . NOW . . . that he gets car sick. . . and proceeds to puke . . . on the kid sitting next to him. I mean he covered him. Who then almost immediately pukes on the kid sitting next to him. In less time then it took for my grandmother to pull over and stop and let everyone out, 2 MORE kids are puking.

Needless to say, we never made it to "the big game" and all of us took turns cleaning out the back of my grandmothers car, which took about 2 hours.

oooh, very rare. Just not as "desireable" as the Nomads for collectors.

Guess that's why you didn't need seat belts back then, everyone was jammed in so tight you couldn't move !
