The Secret Of Steve McQueen's Bullitt Chase Scene

Quote:
For all the attention Steve McQueen has received for the famous chase in "Bullitt," he only drove 10% of the scene. Marc Myers got to drive the route with the stuntman who deserves credit for the scene. -Ed.

But in that 10%, I bet he shifted 3000 times!

Listen to that scene some day and see if you can figure out where they got the 692 speed Mustang.

Couple things I hated about that scene:
The Mustang had an open rear end
The couple sped up scenes to make it look faster just made it look fake.
Double clutching?

But still fun to watch!

True - one hell of a one wheel burnout

Which scenes were those? AFAIK, they did no undercranking/overcranking of the cameras like they did for the car chase in French Connection

Isn't that what race car drivers did back in 1968?

Plus 1968 Mustang GTs had a very sloppy shifter. Some POS from Ford.

And it DID sound cool.

A marvel of . . . . editing . . . which it won the Acad. Award that year.

Have probably played the chase - oh, at least a million times.

I saw it at Radio City Music Hall when it debuted - still the largest "movie theater" in the world . . . AFAIK. Do they still show movies there anymore?
