1968 Road Runner

There were a number of milestones during the Muscle Car Era and right behind the 1964 GTO in importance is the 1968 Road Runner. It too was a first - the first inexpensive muscle car. All you needed to add was an AM Radio.

Detroit was "option obsessed" when it came to selling cars. Make sure your ads and brochures showed many different options that could be added to a car to personalize it . . . and of course get that MSRP up!

There is an old adage when it comes to success in sales . . . when everyone is making a right - make a left. You are no longer part of the "pack" and can trend on virgin ground. And that's just what Plymouth did.

They took their baseline Belvedere Coupe- the one with the push-out rear windows and 11" HD drum brakes, added the basic no frills bench seat interior and started to add the "goodies:" 383/335 HP engine, 4 speed manual trans, hood bulges with engine callouts, F70x14 Redline tires and chrome exhaust tips. And the " piece de resistance" was THE greatest moniker of all . . . Road Runner . . . and of course that infamous "beep beep" horn. Then advertised it for less than $3000. That was the turning point.

Other car manufacturers saw the instant success of the Road Runner and were able to respond much faster than they did against the 1964 GTO. These are the cars that were specifically designed and advertised to sell against the Road Runner:

1968 Olds Ram Rod 350

1968 Dodge Super Bee

1969 Ford Cobra

1969 Chevrolet Chevelle 300 Deluxe Sport Coupe SS396

1969 Pontiac GTO Judge

1969 AMC SC/Rambler

1969 Mercury Cyclone CJ

Lot #1406 - Chassis #SFM6S001 is a historic pre-production prototype. The very first 1966 Shelby GT350 built,

A primary Shelby American test car used for most of the driving tests for the 1966 GT350 development program, it was also used to evaluate a vinyl roof treatment, which was ultimately not released for sale.

SFM6S001 is the only Shelby GT350 to have been originally equipped with the upscale, factory-optional Pony upholstery available with regular Mustangs.
