It's an LS5 SS 454 Chevelle convertible. And it is a beauty. I love the tri-color.

Built for the Canadian market in 1966 and part of 1967 (model years). You had a choice of the 325 or 360 HP 396 (max 350 HP in 1967). This was the only time Chevrolet installed a 396 in a base Chevelle. This ended on December 31, 1966. Beginning 1/1/67 you could get a regular Chevelle SS 396 in Canada just like the one in the USA and the Malibu SS was discontinued. In the USA, the Malibu SS was discontinued at the end of the 1965 model year.

The D96: Sport Stripes were optional.

That's the same car as I posted only in a different photo - either a promotional photo or a brochure photo.

1967 Chevelle Brochure - Canada

It is interesting to note that the TH400 was not available in Canada in 1967 like it was in the USA, only the Powerglide 2 speed auto.

When the stars align . . .

Carroll Shelby becomes a winning race car driver, but due to a heart condition has to give up racing. He wants to become a race car manufacturer but he can not afford to design and build one. Instead, he looked to marry the two from pieces that already existed, like others before him like Allard, Bristol, and Facel, amongst others. He contacted AC Cars who had a surplus of Ace sports cars after losing their engine supplier. Now all he needs is an engine. After being turned down by Chevrolet who did not want a competitor to their Corvette, he goes to Ford who likes the idea. And so the Cobra is born, whose name comes to Shelby in a dream he had.

Shelby's original shop is located in Santa Fe Springs. It is here where he and Dean Moon take the first delivered Ace (sans engine and trans) and one of the two 260 V8's Ford has given him along with a Borg-Warner 4-speed transmission and in a single day's work have the car on the road. Shortly after Shelby hears that Lance Reventlow had decided to wind up his Scarab project. The facility, located in Venice California, becomes available, so Shelby moved his operation and took over Lance’s lease on the Princeton Drive shop in March 1962.

The first Cobra, CSX2000, was unveiled at the New York Auto Show in 1962. In the months that followed, the car would grace every car magazine that mattered, and in the years that followed would become a legend, on and off the road and track.
