1968 Blackbird

Quote:
Developed for Jim Wangers to terrify and humiliate local Detroit-area enthusiasts, this 1968 Firebird Blackbird incorporated many performance tricks learned at Royal Pontiac. Originally equipped with a Ram Air I engine and column-shift automatic transmission, it's currently packing a brutal 455-cubic inch engine and a massaged Turbo 400 tranny.

While the Blackbird wasn't built at Royal Pontiac, then-owner Jim Wangers wanted a standout paint scheme. The black/gold combo had been used at Royal Pontiac to good effect with the full line of Bobcatted cars, and with Wangers ties to Royal, he wanted to acknowledge that connection.

The Blackbird was fitted with Royal Automotive-built 455-cubic inch engine, but when that engine broke, leader Automotive constructed a new 455 engine. This powerplant will haul the Blackbird down the quarter-mile in the 10-second range.

Did you know . . .

The new for 1966 Ford Fairlane GT/GTA came standard with the S code 390. It was the only engine available in the 1966 GT/GTA.

The following year, 1967, the GT/GTA came standard with the 289-2V with a 390-2V and the S code 390 as optional engines.

It is interesting to note that the original sales brochure for the 1970 W30 442 says that both D35 (mirrors) and RWL tires (PK5) are included. But when you look at the window sticker - there are charges for them. Probably Olds no longer included them in the W30 442 at some time after the intro date and before this car was shipped (2/70)

Last Avanti Built

Quote:
On Dec. 31, 1963, W.H. Bennett Sr., a worker at the Studebaker factory in South Bend, Ind., wrote a note in his smooth longhand. He then folded the note, stuffed it into an envelope marked “To Whom It May Concern” in the same script and placed it beneath the liner in the trunk of Studebaker Avanti No. R-5643, the last car to come off the line there.

The note read:

“This 1964 Model Avanti was the last one built in South Bend, Ind. Serial #5643 Body #3902 Line 717 W.H. Bennett Sr. 4739. Happy New Year.”

1966 L79 Nova SS

The Hurst Wheels were purchased for this car in 1966 - they are "original."
